Tim, I recently opened a Mac Mini of mine:
Model Name: Mac mini Model Identifier: Macmini1,1 Processor Name: Intel Core Duo Processor Speed: 1.66 GHz to install bigger memory and bigger HD. When I reassembled my Mini the internal speaker was silent, as was the sound output port, both with cable and toslink. Panic, as the Mini, with EyeTV is our long-serving, and excellent TV source! Reopened the box and noticed that the ribbon cable between the 'lid' and the main part, or 'body' of the Mini was obviously involved with sound as all of the sound circuits and sockets were on the 'lid' part of the Mini. I also noticed that that ribbon was loose at its 'body' end connection. Then noticed that the tiny plastic ears of the fitting at the end of the ribbon had broken off, resulting in it no longer securely clicking into the socket on the 'body'. With subsequent handling the remains of the plastic bit fell off the end of the ribbon! Carefully superglued the plastic bit back onto the ribbon. Then stuck down the ribbon with some electrical tape to hold the ribbon snugly into its socket. Reassembled the Mini, being very kind to the ribbon cable while doing so. Sound is back in all its forms! Your model is probably similar, and may have the same problem. If you want to inspect your Mini, look at the how-to video at <http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/mac_mini_2009_mem_l/> On 13/04/2012, at 9:50 AM, Tim Law wrote: > Hi, > > I have an intel Mac Mini late 2009 running under Lion. > > For the last month or so I have not been able to run the external speakers > that I plug into the headphone socket on the Mac Mini. i.e. no sound comes > out. > > I can use a set of headphones that are connected via a USB port. > > I have also noticed that the internal speaker does not work. > > Having said that, the internal speaker did work last week, but not this week. > I moved the computer, clearly upsetting the fung schway?? spelling. > > What I have done. > Following the advice on various forums I deleted the preference files > com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist > com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist.lockfile > com.apple.soundpref.plist > > > I notice these have not automatically recreated themselves after a restart, > so I reinstated them from a backup. > > I reset the SMC by removing the power cord, holding the power button for 5 > seconds, releasing the power button, reinserting the power cord and > restarting. > I had a little heart attack when the Mac Mini restarted with a folder > containing a question mark, but DiskWarrior rectified that and all is back to > normal. > > However, none of this has fixed the audio problem. > > I would like to be able to play sound from the external speakers and would > like my computer to be running properly.
