No doubt like many others, I received a newsletter email from MacTalk this morning. For the benefit of those who didn't, or for those who don't read MacTalk at all, the following is a quote from part of its content:
'iOS 6 came out yesterday, and while there are many features to love in the newest version of the OS, one big criticism is the new Maps App. Sure it's pretty in places, but there's very little in the way of, you know, useful map information. Those of us using the iOS 6 beta for the last few months have been quietly hoping for a Google Maps app on launch, but when asked about Maps for iOS, Google seemed a little cagey. Speaking of Maps, Australians were a little annoyed to learn that turn by turn would not be available in this country with iOS 6. Scott Forstall responded that "Australia was very important to Apple", and that turn by turn would be coming soon. A day later, Mactalk member Tomwazere spotted an update to the iOS 6 features page, and Turn by Turn was listed as "Coming in October". ' I must say at this point that for my purposes the new Maps app does not appear to be any more or less functional than the Google-based app was. It does seem seem to be basically serviceable though, so I don't feel any worse off. We just have to hope that Apple continues to develop and improve it. Their track record in this regard with other projects is not encouraging though (eg iWork on the Mac).
