Alan, you can download Handbrake for free for any file conversion, you can then import to itunes and stream the converted file to Apple TV if you have one or stream direct to a AVI compatible player (Western Digital etc). You can also just burn the AVI file to a DVD and play directly in your DVD player if it isn't too old. Or if your DVD player has a USB input, drop it onto a memory stick for direct play that way.
