Thanks Daniel. That clears it up, it sounds like a pretty black and white process.
I know spam filters give emails a grading and if it reaches a threshold then it dumps that email as spam. I was thinking that by the user flagging a message as spam it would add a certain number of 'points' to that email, so that legitimate emails might still get through as long as they didn't contain other material that triggered the concern of the spam filter. I'll take care when using the 'thumbs down' button so I don't lose any of my legitimate contacts.
