Or why not just use File Sharing, which allows you to use the direct location (or desktop folder) you want to copy to. It's then there and you can make an alias and drop the file from one machine to the other.
Or, use Screen Sharing. If you screen share from the one iMac to the other iMac and you drag the file you can then put it into the same location directly from one machine to the other. (i.e. you can drag from your Desktop on iMac 1 to the Desktop on iMac 2). When the screen sharing window is open you can just drag it from say your Desktop into the open "Sharing Window". You can then have it going directly into an external drive connected to imac2 if you want. One transfer. Done. Just another way to do. I always go the simplest fastest ways to do things, rather then lots of different things. Makes it easier.
