What have you already tried Stuart? Safe boot mode?
Did you let it restart all by itself after the software update, or did it get turned off before the updates had been completed? Have you tried restarting from original disks to make sure it's not a hardware issue. Insert original disk and hold C to force it to boot from that. Do you have disk Warrior, and have you run it? How did you update? Via the normal online Software Update? What operating system did she have, or have now? Did you follow the oft repeated expectations of Ronni before and after any upgrades? i.e. backup, permissions fix etc etc. She's got a whole tutorial on her website if I recall. Or perhaps you are busy managing the relationship with your daughter - chocolate etc......
