Hi Peter,

Did you put the Thumb Drive in another computer and save data to it since it 
last worked? 
Did you properly eject the Thumb Drive?

look to see if it show's up in Disk Utilities and the System Profiler / System 
Report on the USB bus. 

If you are plugging it into the keyboard (if using a Desktop Mac), try one of 
the USB ports.

There also could be a conflict with other USB devices, try ejecting and 
disconnect anything connected via USB (other than keyboard) , then restart the 
Mac and connect only the Thumb drive.

If you still don't see it on the desktop it may have been improperly 
disconnected from the Mac while mounted.
