Also try an SMC reset and a PRAM reset. PRAM reset https://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243 (Listed for Mountain Lion, but works for all)
SMC Reset - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Also, if you plug a set of headphones in, then restart and see if it "kick starts" it to show back up. I've seen that fix it as well.
