The IMAP accounts - messages stay on the Mail Server and all messages sync to the 4 devices listed above. The POP account as you know doesn't sync like IMAP, so if you have other devices that you collect your mail on you have to set POP account to 'Keep Messages on Server' for a certain amount of time for you to download the messages to all your devices. I keep my POP account messages on the Server for 'One Week'. But normally I physically delete all the messages from the POP server once the messages have been downloaded to all my devices. I don't use my POP Account to send new messages, I only receive messages. It is an OLD account... The first email account I set up when I started with Westnet many years ago. I have to leave it activated for messages from long ago companies, organizations & people that might only have that old email address.... The POP server doesn't keep track of whether a message has been downloaded, read, or deleted; only your client (Apple mail) knows this, and the assumption underlying the POP protocol is that you want to read, organize, and store your mail on a SINGLE device, using the Server only as a conduit to receive your mail. As you would appreciate I receive a LOT of email per day - anything around 100 messages. I don't really know the number and haven't time to check as I don't need to know ;-( I know I have received all mail so far today from all my accounts.
