Hi Laura Another aspect of downloading movies is the default settings in both iTunes and Apple TV. These defaults can be over-ridden at purchase so that if your default was “1080 HD” you can change this to “SD” for an individual purchase if you want.
Apple TV 2 is designed for 720 HD and the only default settings are 720HD or SD. Apple TV 3 is designed for 1080 HD, so I assume the default is set at 1080 but can be changed to lower resolutions. In iTunes the Preferences > Store setting has a scroll box to select 720 or 1080 HD. These set the Store display to reflect the pre-set default resolution as the first choice. Setting defaults is a convenience: as I said you can select any option available from the iTunes Store when purchasing.
