Ronni, 
        you and others may remember that some time back I had a problem with a 
Bose sound system that would only play from the AV sound from the TV but not 
from the preferred optical link.  I lived with this more or less satisfactory 
situation for some time then did some more digging and got the solution.  
Like many users, I am sure, I record everything of interest on a Panasonic 
recorder and play back at a time of our choice; in fact we never watch the TV 
“live” direct from the antenna.   Well documented, I  subsequently found that 
recorders transmit correctly to the TV via the HDMI cable but mildly corrupt 
the audio so that the Bose can not recognise it.  The solution is a small magic 
box which intercepts the audio from the HDMI cable and passes it in its correct 
format to the Bose.  I now have  such a system installed (inexpensive by the 
way) and all is now as it should be.  
I realise now, after the event, that I did not mention the recorder in my 
earlier correspondence, assuming that HDMI was HDMI - I live and learn!  
This may help or at least be of interest to others.
