Hi John, I was in the same situation with an old Mac Mini and now just love my new 27” iMac - with the 27” screen I used on the Mac mini happily running beside doing it’s best.
I cannot recall how I got my data across, but I recall considering the back up from external hard drives of Time Machine and the clone from Super Duper. They were USB, and so compatible with the iMac.
