Hi, I have a problem with a newly purchased WD My Book 4TB external HD
I had a 1TB ext HD that I used to do back ups on an iMac. When I used
SuperDuper on it, it kept failing. I sent the failure log off to Shirt Pocket
and they suggested that there may be a problem with the Ext HD. So I ran
DiskWarrior over it and it said that there was a problem with the Ext HD and to
back up as the disk was likely to fail.
I have an:
1. iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 running 10.11.6 El Capitan; an
2. iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 running 10.10.5 Yosemite; and an
3. iMac Retina 4k, 21.5 inch , Late 2015 running El Capitan running 10.11.6.
So I bought the 4TB Ext HD and partitioned it into 4 1TB sections using Mac OS
Extended (Journaled).
For the 2012 iMac, I used two of the partitions. 1 called Time Machine and a
second with the same name as the built in 2012 HD. I backed the Time Machine
partition with Time Machine and the 2012 HD with SuperDuper.
For the 2009 iMac, I used one of the partitions, with the same name as the
built in 2009 HD. I backed the 2009 HD with SuperDuper.
For the 2015 iMac, I used the final partition, with the same name as the built
on 2015 HD. I intended to back this 2015 HD up with SuperDuper.
Now the first three back ups went well and all worked.
With the final one for the 2015 iMac. I connected the 4TB Ext HD and start to
open SuperDuper, the disks appeared and I selected the 2015 1TB partition.
After a short while four alerts came, “Disk Not Ejected Properly” - Eject “Time
Machine” before disconnection or turning it off.
The four Ext HD icons on the desktop disappear and does the image in the “to”
window of SuperDuper drop down box “Copy 2015 iMac to 2015 iMac”
When I try to reselect the 2015 iMac in the “to” window, it and the others
cycle through being visible and disappearing and at the same time appearing,
vanishing and reappearing on the desktop. Whilst further “Disk Not Ejected
Properly” alerts appear.
I restarted the 2015 iMac and while it was shut down removed the USB Cable. I
then ran Diskwarrior on it. It said that the directory had an effectiveness of
6 out of 10 when it was completed the new directory was 10 out of 10.
I then did the process again and the result was the same. All four partitions
failed to mount and the 2015 was not continually available in the “to” window
of SD, whilst again further alerts appeared.
I connected the 4TB Ext Hd to the 2009 iMac and all four partitions
successfully mounted. (I haven’t checked it on the 2012 iMac as I am running a
SuperDuper back up on the failed 1TB Ext HD after running Disk Utility on and
Erasing it and running First Aid on it. I am about ⅔ of the way through and it
seems to be working).
Anyone have any idea as to what has gone wrong and how can I fix it?
Take care.
Matt
