HI Neil, yes I have been very patient and as you say sometimes the time 
calculator is way out and so I gave it ~4 hours (from the 28 minutes remaining 
point) before I decided to intervene. Using the Apple Support instructions I 
used the MacOS Recovery method Option/Command/R on start up. This was chosen to 
get the most up to date OS that the unit could accomodate - 10.13.5. It is now 
all successfully updated and in the end only took ~30-40 minutes. 

I am now migrating all of Tims data from his SATA connected HDD via USB. I 
expected it will run all night given ~350GB approx to migrate. Fingers crossed 
it is all ok in the morning.

I am glad the power is back on and hopefully not much collateral damage caused.
