Hi thanks for that Robin. I downloaded that and trawled through it. It seems 
the SATA drive storage format was used up until mid 2012 so that is giving me 
the range of what to look for. 

Alternatives are still to go later and then with a later machine (MBP or MBA) 
with minimum 500GB storage use the Migration assistant to do the transfer from 
the removed SATA drive using my SATA adaptor (from my wife failed MBP) into the 
new machine. 

I suppose newer is always better.
