Hi Pete,

As I mentioned last time, despite a long-held preference for stand-alone
software and an aversion to subscription models, I finally decided that a
family MS365 subscription was the best for Georgie & I.

Other factors which came into play - the one subscription covers:
up to 6 users (though we are only 2)
installation on 3 computers, two iPads, 2 phones (one of which is now an
Android phone)
auto-update means you automatically have the most up to date software version
for the relevant device
it would also cover the PC versions if I wanted to run any Windows virtual
machines (I don’t at present but have in the past)
1TB of online storage PER USER so we have 2TB of “OneDrive” space between us –
(supplements our Dropbox quota)
Like Dropbox but unlike iCloud (which is also expensive for extra storage for
each person) Onedrive works across different platforms
Although 2TB more than meets our need, if required I could create another
“user” and invite them onto our subscription with their own 2TB quota.

Although I am sure that Apple’s own offerings are fine for many people, Excel
is my de-facto accounting program to manage investment portfolios and tax
workbooks for both our individual and SMSF accounts. The sheer amount of time&
effort spent over many years of Excel use at home & work means that I am very
comfortable with the program and have MANY multi-sheet workbooks (some
cross-linked) still in current use. I have no time or inclination to even
explore  how well Numbers could handle all this -or how it could be ported over
(I know Numbers can open Excel spreadsheets but this is a different level!) let
alone the time taken to become as proficient as I am in Excel!

Regarding purchasing – I’m down here in darkest Albany but we have a local
Officeworks which usually has the best price anyway (and a best price guarantee
if you find it cheaper elsewhere).

Certainly don’t let Microsoft auto-renew at their standard price (currently
$129 for the 6-user family subscription but $113 at Officeworks)

I think that, inevitably, software as a subscription service will become the
only option going forward – many of the companies that I either invest in or
research (think mining software, air traffic software, billing software
systems, etc) are discussing how the change from one-off license fees (and
upgrade charges) to subscription services gives them ongoing benefits not only
in continuity in income but reduced support costs in dealing with out of date
systems.

You may also have noticed that after years of new computers having more storage
than the older models, the trend has now reversed as more data is stored “in
the cloud”.

Of course, the global IT ‘pandemic’ that could result if the internet was ever
‘taken down’ does not bear thinking about!

Anyway, I’m getting WAAAY off topic here ;o)

Cheers

Neil

Hi Pete

I purchased my one off MS Office license from itech. At the time, they were
the cheapest around.

Hi folks, I searched through the archives and couldn’t locate the previous
thread, but I need to buy an updated MS Office license (family pack) for my lot
here.

Can anyone recommend a seller for this - I want the one off purchase not the
annual renewal option?

Thanks in advance.
