Some good points Wendy. I have always wanted to come to the meetings but circumstances have made it difficult for me.
I live in the Swan Valley and I am 75 years old. I am very nervous about driving too far at night, especially in bad weather. Consequently I have never been to a WAMUG meeting. Several times I have tried to join the Zoom meetings, but something always crops up. Usually family or friends clashing with the meeting time. And that is something I do not regret because I feel lucky in that respect. Most events of any kind that I attend are in daylight, but I realise that would not suit working people. But I really do hope that WAMUG continues (even without meetings) because I feel it is invaluable. Perhaps the idea of meetings when necessary is not a bad idea. PS: Just my little winge really. I notice the lack of postings since we insisted that only financial members should be allowed to post and reply. So many seemed to be annoyed about paying a fee that I was shocked. For $30.00 per year ….. REALLY !! So now we have way less communication than we ever had. And I find that very disappointing. However, we should never let that put us off. I feel that we have some very dedicated volunteers running the group. And I am very thankful for that. I’d like to contribute something to your conversation when you discuss the future of the group. I haven’t been a member for very long, nor a good attendee, but I have found most of the topics to be aspects that I don’t use and never see myself using, or are too advanced. But I do need help with numerous MacBook/phone things and I do like learning new or better ways of doing the things that I do. I appreciate there is probably a core of the group that loves learning the latest. I don’t really know what I am trying to say except that I would be a more frequent attendee if I knew the topic was something that I would use. Is it worth looking at a completely different format? 1. Public libraries have reinvented themselves over the past 10 years. I used to belong to a group that taught English to non-English speakers and we would meet on a one-on-one basis at a library within Melville It worked beautifully. I’m not sure how this sort of thing is accepted now but worth looking into? 1. Perhaps some of us who have retired could meet informally at a public library and learn from each other? Only open to members of the group? To reduce travel it could be at various libraries 2. Or perhaps the Chairperson/President could come up with the topic and then someone could put his/her hand up to lead that topic at a public library? I think that is similar to what is happening now except the venue isn’t at a library. 3. Or something like our Repair Cafes that are popping up. There could be multiple tables and on one day in a month there could be an ‘expert’ on a topic at each table. Hmm that may not suit the advanced group. I’m sure there are other models. I think it would be a shame for a self-help community group with a very long history to die. Hello Fellow WAMUGgers, This message is to inform you that there will be NO GENERAL MEETING this Tuesday, 2 August. From when I started attending meetings at Curtin Uni, when we had between 20 - 30 members and several presenters at each meeting. Since then, there have been changes, as one would expect, but the gradual decline in attendance has been the hardest. So at our July Monthly meeting, the committee decided to move from monthly meetings to having meetings ‘as and when needed’. We are are looking at surveying and discussing the issue with the group at some stage soon, so keep your eyes on the list Cheers, Maureen -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <[5]https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/> Guidelines - <[6]http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Settings & Unsubscribe - <[7]http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug> Regards Stephen Chape Mac by choice Windows because my employer knew no better References 1. mailto:[email protected] 2. mailto:[email protected] 3. mailto:[email protected] 4. mailto:[email protected] 5. https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ 6. http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml 7. http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug
