Today i found the following liberary: http://lib3ds.sourceforge.net/ - Written in portable ANSI-C - (L)GPL License - Support for (keyframe) animations (?) - and many other things... Looks like a good candidate for a PIE replacement. Well, and Blender can in/export 3ds as well. However, per said that he already has some expirience with this lib.
