I think the main point of this is that we should be updating the 
changelog. It has now been 7 months since we branched 2.1. This was 
revision 4789 (compared with almost 6500 we are now). I don't think 7 
months between branching different releases is too short. Checking the 
SVN log shows enough changes. I don't know how many of those were 
backported of course. I don't feel like updating the changelog now, but 
I'll check it out somewhere this week.

The big question is, would this be a reason to delay the branching + 
release for a month or two? Does it fix any bugs? Especially if you 
don't know if you will have time to finish it soon, I don't think we 
should wait for it.

I agree with Per that 2.2 would be a nice target for long term support. 
I only hope that it doesn't become as much of a pain as 2.0.
