It is very tricky to trace through all of the javascript on that page to determine what events might have listeners causing the text to go into that box. I know that watir does not fire all events associated with clicking when you call #click, nor does it pass all of the relevant information that the browser does. But, I couldn't say what might be missing in your particular case because it's just too much javascript to look through. As orde mentions, talking to the app developer might be able to tell you more about what javascript is associated with clicking on that thing.
