In addition to this error, Openfire records this warning on my setup:

2009.08.20 13:11:10 Closing session due to incorrect hostname in
stream header. Host: wave.iws03svn1. Connection:
org.jivesoftware.openfire.net.socketconnect...@10b23cf socket: Socket
[addr=/192.168.15.38,port=39368,localport=5269] session: null

I don't get it.  "wave" is the subdomain for the external component
and iws03svn1 is the Openfire server name.
