Brian,
That sounds like the same behavior I was seeing. I had two issues:
1. Make sure the intermediate cert is included in the list of certs, and use
the openssl command line tool to verify that the certs are good. I've updated
the Certificates wiki page with details:

2. My last problem was that I made bitworking.net into a Google Apps
domain, but forgot
to turn of the 'Chat' service for the domain, which meant that
Google Apps Chat was
sucking up all my wave messages, it was never going out to my
server. Once I disabled
the Chat service I was up and waving.
