There no reason it can't take an xmpp server as a configuration option and use that for user verification, though.
Just keep a light copy of the user details (keys, etc.) in the database, and do a proxy'd login request when you authenticate the user. That way the wave server instance can point at the xmpp server it's attached to, or any other xmpp server that happens to be up and running already (eg. intranet, google talk, etc). ~ Doug.
