Hi Zakwan, Yes, that is correct. The protocol is an open spec which everyone is encouraged to use, regardless of the fate of Google Wave as a standalone product.
Many companies have worked with us to federate products and product prototypes using the Wave Federation Protocol: http://googlewavedev.blogspot.com/2010/06/wave-federation-keeps-growing-rich-text.html I hope the products become successful and the prototypes come to fruition. We are likely to turn down our federated Google Wave instance at wavesandbox.com by year end, but the protocol does not depend on our participation. We are exploring how to ensure the continued maintenance and evolution of the protocol. There have been some good suggestions on this forum and we will begin drafting a proposal soon.
