Brenda Jo, I really got a kick out of your movie titles and descriptions for Mr. Schwamp. It was fun just to try to visualize Mr. Schwamp in such roles!
The other day, someone made the comment about asking Jackie Joseph if she could identify Mr. Schwamp. She said that there was a sort of caste system among actors and that actors with speaking parts didn't talk to actors without speaking parts (extras). This is the first time I had heard this, and I think it goes a long way in explaining why no one connected with the show seems to know his name. If they never even spoke to him, how *could* they know his name? It's too bad that extras (or background actors, as they're now called) are treated as second-class citizens in the entertainment industry, but there is also a delicious irony here. Think about how often the mysterious Mr. Schwamp (lowly extra) is fondly discussed and referenced here in this digest, compared to other actors with speaking parts. The man who was ignored at the time by actors of greater stature has now become one of the "stars" of Mayberry (our little corner of it, anyway). Don't you love it?!? Thelma Lou (Janet) P. S. -- If we ever do find out Mr. Schwamp's true identity, all the mystery will be gone, and we won't be able to have fun speculating about him anymore. Then we will probably stop talking about him. So maybe we shouldn't be in such a hurry to find the answer.
