Allan - I think this will work just fine. Remember those subject
headings folks, and try not to send "autoresponse" (out of town)
messages to the list, like the first message of today's digest.

Back to Mayberry stuff, I was cleaning up some directories on my
computer and happened across this message on Barney quotes from
Allan and me to the digest from April of 1998. I like to hear
myself talk, of course, but this made me laugh then, and I
laughed even harder when coming across it again.

Allan, that is a hillarious quote, one of my favorites. I always make
everybody in the room get all set up for it, then I bust a gusset laughing
and rolling around the room. Classic Barney. Here's two more that slay me.

Hi Gang,

Kudos to allan for all he has done with the website and this daily
gathering on the many front porches of Mayberry. I am sorry allan, that
I too am guilty of wonderment, as I was gone and had not caught up on
past mailings and, reading my new mail from the newest to the oldest
found this new format. Certainly hope it helps free ya up for other
things, and the way it looks we can actually get them more often than
before. When time became a problem allan let technology help him NIP
IT!!! LOL

Paul took the words out of my mouth when he advised, please use the
subject line and please make some reference to the previous article your
commenting on so we can understand ya better...OH, rule number 2,
remember it.

Now on with the show, how many characters can anyone remember who drove
their own cars. Well, gotta run down to the corner to get some ice
cream...I'm a man in a hurry!

Dear Digest,
Does anyone know what type of weapon Barney carried while on duty?
Perfer model number and company!

Thanks
Charles

Charles;

Barney carried a Smith and Wesson Model 10, 38 special. This was pretty
much the standard firearm for police officers for many years, up until the
70's when most switched to a .357 magnum. Todays peace officer carries
some type of automatic in a variety of calibers, 9mm, .40 S&w,, .45 ACP.
How do I know the type carried by Barney? By the way the cylinder release
works when he opens it to insert his single bullet. A Smith pushes
forward, a Colt pulls back.

Just had a Howard Mcnear sighting (err actually it was a hearing).
He was Ebenezer Scrooge on an episode of The Six Shooter starring Jimmy
Stuart
as Britt Ponset, The Six Shooter was an old radio show from the early 50's.
Howard also played the Doc on the radio version of Gunsmoke.
You never know where tags connections will turn up.

Allen,
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading the digest. Glad you
were able to automate and have more time for your family. I love being a part
of such a nice community. I don't write much but I sure do enjoy sitting here
and listening to all of you. Thanks Doni in Utah

Folks I just want to say up front that Allan had nothing to do with I'm about
to say. I also agree Allan should have more time for himself and family.
If-in changing the digest here and there makes that happen I must say I'm
very glad about it. And Allan was right with me (Mike, dinocrocet what the
heck are you talking about? Especially since P and P hadn't even been sent
out yet ). I said all that to say this, I know so often when Allan tries to
put us back on track he gets a lot of flack for it and I got to thinkin that
the new look to the digest could really stir it up. I went to a silly
extreme and it sure got the result I hoped it would get. Folks spoke up
everywhere for Allan like we all should. He has always been a prince of
fellow and glad I'm one and all agree we should all give the digest a new
chance. Allan I'm sorry for stretchin the truth like I did and maybe some
folks would just about hate me for it but I've seen how little things can
cause such a stir that I thought this could just send it over the top.
Take Care and I hope you can understand why I did this I'm glad we all feel
so strongly for Allan and his wonderful family. Mike (dinocrocet)

Subject: the Digest...

I just wanted to send in my $.02 on the new Digest (before we decide it's a
dead horse and we need to quit beating it!). Yes, it's different than we're
used to, but like others have said, if it frees up some more of Allan's time
to spend with Jan and Adam, I'm all for it! I've been a member of WBMUTBB
for nearly four years. When I joined, there *was* no Digest! If I had
something to say to the other 175 members, I had to either figure out how to
do a mass mailing on my own, or send the message to Allan, who in turn sent
it on to the rest of the members for me. :-) I really appreciate all the
time and effort Allan puts in for our corner of Mayberry, and i *especially*
appreciate the sacrifice that Jan and Adam have made to let him keep up with
it! I just think this is one "stamp machine" we'll have to learn to like!
:-)

Thank you Allan for all you have done. I don't like change, but if this
frees you up to spend more time with your family, I say GREAT!
You go Jan...awesome post. I think we owe you both a debt of gratitude.
Allan for all the time he puts into this and Jan for being so patient
and for backing him up. Way to go Allan...you too Jan.
Real smoothe, the way you floated that new digest out there.

I am happy that Jan reinforced Allen's situation re the digest. Personally,
I can't see a problem. It looks fine to me as long as I can put in my 2
cents (less than Opie gave). Allan is a prince - and if anybody says any
different they're gonna have to reckon (there's that word again) with me.
That won't be a pretty sight. I would like to see Allan spend more time with
his family - His little Allan needs grooming to become Little Floyd. I have
the utmost respect for this man and, if he wants to free up some of his time,
then I say to Allan, "More power to ya".

Hey Everybody,

Thank you all for the kind words. I know that change is something that none
of us TAGS fans like too much.....and in truth we've had about 20 people
"unsubscribe" themselves from the Digest since the change over.....but I
really believe that this method will be a good one for us all.

Here's a few things you ought to know.

Right now, I'm letting the list run itself ***BUT*** I can "moderate" the
Digest just like always with just the "flip of a switch." The truth is that
I very rarely ever have to do any real moderating of the Digest so I don't
think this will be a problem. In the next few days I will switch it over to
being moderated just so I can pratice "moderating" and get a good feel for
doing. I don't expect that I'll have to use that skill very often though.

Some of you, mostly those on AOL, ARE seeing a difference in the way the
WBMUTBB Digest looks. On AOL, the "Subj:" line was always in BOLD and now
that's now the case. I think that's way I hear a few comments about it not
looking quite as good. You folks that aren't on AOL may not have ANY idea
what I'm talking about because you've seen very little difference.

The new Digest will mail itself out to you everytime the Digest reaches a
certain size...that's why you got two issues on Sunday. I'm still working to
make this Digest as close to what we're all use to as possible so I'm
"tweaking" the system right now.

I'm able to do things like tell the computer to let me approve any message
that has the phrase "I will be out of my office" and things like that so that
we won't have automated responses posted to us all to in the Digest. It's
working so far but I'll be tweaking that feature for a while I'm sure.

I'm telling you all more than you most likely wanted to know but I feel like
"we're all in this manhunt together" and I want you all to know what's going
on behind the scenes here at WBMUTBB.

OH...HERE'S SOMETHING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER. The WBMUTBB Digest will ONLY
accept email from MEMBERS email addresses. That means if you try to send a
message to the Digest from work and you're email account at home is the one
that's registered as a member....it won't work. You have to send the email
from the account that you signed up using. You can look at the WBMUTBB Member
List to be sure you're using the right one.

http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

The WBMUTBB Digest is a Private list. That means that other people CAN NOT
get in there and pull your email address of the server. This is to do my
part to keep your information out of "spammers" hands. This is the way we've
always been here at WBMUTBB and I just wanted to make sure you know that has
not changed.

I'm sure there's more and I'll try to write it all up and put it on the
WBMUTBB web site in the Members area as soon as I can. (Here's where I can
see if I actually have more time to do stuff for the web site. ha ha)

Thanks again to everybody and if you have concerns, email me and I'll see if
I can do something about your concern.
