Dear Mayberry Fans,

I have a small web - page up and running that shows 1 picture of Mayberry
Days 1998 & Mayberry License Plates that were run here in the state of
Indiana. I hope you are able to listen to the background music. It is 'The
Fishin' Hole ' song. So, pull up a chair & turn up the music! It's not very
much, but it is a start. I guess any Mayberry fan who just saw Andy Griffith
would be excited to have a small page for starters. Go to
http://www.theremc.com/cmckim/photos.htm or if that won't work try
http://www.theremc.com/cmckim & click on photos. This is the main home
page. It's a 'Ham' Radio page. I'm proud of this one. It's good and clean!

Take Care,

Hi Mayberry fans. Loved yesterday's digest. If you didn't check out Miss
Poovey's page, (message one) you missed a treat. What a nice tribute. She
needs to be commended. If you still have your digest go back and look at it.
Also thanks for the site info to vote on your favorite TV show. I cast my
vote. It only takes a minute so please take time to do so. One last message
Jim Clark, if you are reading this please send me your email address, I
can't find it and have two questions to ask you. Happy Thanksgiving to all,
especially Allan and his family. He does a tremendous job with this website.
Lots of luck to you and yours. Cathy S. a.k.a. Skippy, one of Mayberrry's

Rocketman was the only person to get all six - several people got 3 or 4.

1- Stranger's attorney = Sawyer's lawyer
2- Cheap bully = Chintzy Quincy
3- Jinx's governmental body = Bennett's Senate
4- Fun girl's flower child = Skippy's hippie
5- Cow thief's good fortune = Luke's fluke
6- Gomer's cool girlfriend = Groovy Poovey

Terri said that she was born in WV and she didn't consider it a southern
state! Well, I was born I was also born there (like a goodly amount of
Digest subscribers!) And I beg to differ! Virginia was the head of the
Confederate South; West Virginia at one time was just that- a western
part of Virginia. I give it to ya that WV isn't in the "deep" south but
it is indeed a southern state. Heck, somebody's got to be on the direct
underbelly of that imaginary dividing line!

Hi Everyone...

Gee, TAGS is just everywhere...Right here in organ class in my studio in
little ol' Hot Springs, AR..We were talking about snoring and what causes it.
We found out that the culprit is the little "punching bag" that hangs down in
the back of the throat, and we were scratching our heads trying to come up
with the correct word, when one of the students chimed in with "uvula, uvula,
all God's children got uvulas"!
Happy Thanksgiving to all ..especially to Allan and his family.. : C ))

Although it's been a while since I've perused a video store, I just wanted
to let everyone know that there is a Bewitched video called "Generation Zap"
(I think) that contains two episodes with Bernard Fox. His picture is on
the back of the video so it should be easy to locate. Mr. Fox can also be
seen in "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo". What a treat to have Don Knotts and
Mr. Fox in this fun flick. You can get "Herbie" through Weavers.

We're now at 1312 members here at WBMUTBB Chapter. We've lost 64 members
since the last update and gained 42. I'm hoping most of the problems with the
move to the new mailing list format are behind us and it looks like things
are heading back to normal operation here at WBMUTBB.

The latest WBMUTBB Chapter member list can be found at the at the WBMUTBB
Chapter's web site. Goto the web site and click on the "Members Only" link.
There you will see another link you can click on. That will take you to a
page for entering your PASSWORD for the Member List page. Enter your
PASSWORD: harvey

Or you can go directly there by going to:

   http://members.aol.com/anewsome/private/harvey.htm

The member list is still located on AOL so that isn't a type-o.

Below are the biograph's on most of our newest members. Be sure to say "hey"
back to them and tell 'em a little about yourselves so they'll feel right at
home here in Mayberry.

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody. Hope everybody has a good holiday. Welcome
to all the new members. Also wanted to let everybody know, somebody here in
Pensacola is a Mayberry Fan. We helped some friends move last weekend from
Molino to Cantonment, and right around the corner from their house is a
street named Mt. Airy.

Have a great and safe weekend.

To update you folks who don't live in the Kansas City area, we are
now getting TV commercials with Don Knotts dressed up as Santa saying
"HO HO". The ads are for the New Theater, where Don has starred in 3
plays (the most popular they have had).

Also, a print sighting in the paper in a serial column on a murder
investigation. A policeman of a small Missouri town compared himself
to Barney Fife when his town was descended upon by federal
investigators. It proves Barney is the most lasting TV cultural icon
- -- when was the last time you heard anyone compare somebody to "Louie
from Taxi?"

Put that in your smipe and poke it!

Hey folks,

Now's your chance for something that's ONE OF A KIND!!!

Ole Ben has just placed some ORIGINAL SCRIPTS from Hal "Otis" Smith's estate
on the Weaver's web site. These are NOT TAGS scripts from scripts from other
shows that Hal appeared on...Love Boad, Night Court, Donna Reed, Green Acres,
and more! There aren't very many and there's only ONE of each script so you
might want to hurry if you'd like one.

You'll find them by going to Weaver's Dept. Store and then to the
"Collectibles Corner" link there on the front page or by clicking the
"Collection" link at the top of any page at Weaver's.

Enjoy!!!

Hey I'm in a thanks giving mood, if you know what I mean.

Thanks to Miss Poovey for sharing Opie's essay with us. Nice piece.
Nice website. This one, like many others has good TAGS pictures right
off the film. I have to ask, like Gomer when Goober does his
impressions...How do you do that?

Thanks Jim Clark for answering my question a few weeks back about a TAGS
extra that turned out to be Joe Hamilton. You mentioned an article in
the Bullet, and lucky me, it was an issue I had, but had not read yet.
Good Bio on a very funny man. Lots of great scenes with Gomer (hearing
story about Birdie fishin and in Citizen's Arrest) and Barney.

Thanks to those who wrote about and attended Andy's appearance at the
Grand Ole Opry. My mother happened to tape it on TNN, and I got to
watch it when I visited on Thanksgiving. I thought it was interesting
that he made this observation about his show (apologize if someone
already mentioned this or if you don't agree) He said something to the
effect of..."I wish I had never smoked on camera. That's a bad habit.
We just didn't know then what we know today about the effects of
smoking." His wife was charming, and seeing him play and sing
that old familiar song from the show was really a treat.

Thanks to the Newsome Twosome. Our editor in chief Allan, and his wife,
Jan, who lets him spend time tending to all of us. I'm still puzzled
(thinkin with that bucket on my head) by the 60 people who dropped over
the last month when the format changed.
It's free, it's fun, it's about our favorite show.
As Gomer says "people sure are odd" Andy "Yes, they sure are"

Hey to you and yers

Subject: First-Run Viewers

Hi all,

It's a sigh of relief, or comfort maybe, when I sit down to watch an episode,
or even hear that whistlin' theme music. If tests were run, I'm sure blood
pressure everywhere goes down when someone engages those thirty minutes of
Mayberry life. There are many reasons for this, some specific to
individuals, some we all share. But part of the attraction for me is the
nostalgia. A similar feeling is when I visit Bedford Falls with George Bailey
in It's A Wonderful Life. Since nostalgia in TAGS is a prevalent element
nowadays, what was it that drew folks back when the show first aired? It was
the 60's, but basically depicted life in the forties and fifties. So was
nostalgia the draw then as well? Or was it something else?

I remember watching the later episodes as a child, but not the early ones.
Who of the First-Run Viewers out there have an opinion on this? I'd love to
hear your recollections of our favorite show when it first hit the airwaves.

Subject: digest input - ITS BIG

Hi folks, I got some news. Its big. Its really BIG.=A0=A0=A0

Well it was BIG for me.

I GOT TO MEET DON KNOTTS AND HAVE MY PICTURE TOOK WITH HIM AND EVERYTHING!

(I posted this on The Front Porch last week, so skip this if you already=20
read it there...)

I got home the other night and I had a letter from the wonderful Jim
Clark...it was a notice that Don Knotts would be in DC doing a book signing,=
=20
and it apologized for the short notice and also gave info on his 2 t.v.=20
appearances.

I was hoping I'd get to go and asked my mom to come with me. She couldn't go=
=20
at the last minute and I did not know where this place was. Its hard to=20
drive in the dark, watch for pedestrians, building numbers and not get lost.=
=20
Plus, DC has their stop lights on poles on the ground and I'm used to them=
=20
being high over head, so thats just one more thing to look out=20
for....needless to say, I didn't think I'd be able to go, but my wonderful=20
husband Gilly (after me begging and bribing him with supper out at KFC)=20
agreed to take me down there.

The book signing was at The National Press Club and its swanky, let me tell=20
you. Marble everywhere, lots of impressive flags, waiters with champagne=20
and other drinks on trays and security guards swarming all around with them=20
ear phone thingee's on so's they can communicate. Mostly everyone there was=20
dressed up in suits and dresses and all, probably just coming from=20
work...and I dressed in my pink pants with my MAYBERRY shirt and badge on=20
(LOL - I was a sight!).

When I walked up to pay my $3.00 to get in - the 4 people at the table were=20
smiling and said "Lets see if we can guess who she is going to see first?" =20
I answered that he was the ONLY one I came to see. (I also saw a few others=
=20
from TAGSRWC there who had also been notified by mail about the book signing=
=20
- - we just had a blast in the check out lines gabbing and all.)

Anyhow, there were 40 different authors there, set up with tables and copies=
=20
of their new books and all, very noisy. Don was at Table 4 near the front.

There were a few folks in line and then I waited and perused Don's new book=20
called "Barney Fife and other characters I've known".=A0=A0 When I finally g=
ot=20
up there, he looked at my shirt and smiled a bit.=A0=A0 I introduced myself=20=
and=20
asked if he'd autograph my book for me. He did, then I asked if I could take=
=20
a picture with him...he agreed and smiled so nice for me.

I told Don that I had went to M.D. 99 for the first time and how much I=20
enjoyed it. I asked if he thought he would make it to
any M.D. Festivals in the future, and he said he didn't know.

I watched for a while longer as others came before it started to wind=20
down...He looked a little tired at this point but he was still smiling for=20
pictures and all even though it was time to leave. (He didn't have very many=
=20
books left at the end, only a few on the table).=A0 All that flying around=20
from NY to DC in one day and the appearances must be tiring, especially if=20
you are in your 70's (he was on Live with Regis and also on Conan Obrien (I=20
think) in NY on Weds 11/17 and I missed both of them...).

I was glad I got to go...a memorable occasion for me - one I will never=20
forget. And I have the wonderful Jim Clark to thank for it! (And of course=
=20
my darlin' person and driver, Gilly.)

Mayberry says thanx and happy motoring!
Idelle

Well, I have old Barn's book and it is quite interesting. I got the
autographed
version, which makes three of Don's autographs I have. ( I guess my fav is
the one
he signed in person at Opryland a few years ago.)

The book tells a lot of info I had never read or heard about him. I never
knew that
he was a vent for awhile at the beginning of his carreer.

Can't wait for TV to start showing Andy, Gomer and the Honeymooners. Have to
retape all my Andys.....the quality will be better and hopefully the complete
shows
will be broadcast.

Does anyone know if local stations can continue to show Andy?

Well, I'll be dogged. One of the members put me on to this sighting, but I
never was able to verify it until this weekend. Johnny is the irate
customer that drives off because Gomer is too busy telling the Birdie Blush
story. And Johnny is in the final shot (since the epilog wasn't there)
standing around with Jason and Luther and everybody listening to another of
Gomer's stories. Another sighting to add to my life list.

Even when the show was brand new in 1960, it had a nostalgic feeling. Andy
Griffith readily admits that although the "Old Griffith Show" (as he calls
it) was filmed in the 1960s, they were trying to make it feel like the
1930s.

One obvious example is the "Sarah, get me so-and-so" telephones that almost
everyone in Mayberry has. I was not yet born in 1960, but I would guess
that almost every home in America had dial phones by that time.

Sorry Greg, I don't recall watching TAGS when it first aired; I was 11
and had a very busy sixth grade with a teacher who was determined to
prepare us for junior high as well as introduce us to a little culture -
he was wonderful. I was also very active in my church and with friends.
Then a very busy high school career. My first recollection of moving to
Mayberry was in the early 70's when I moved out on my own into an apt.
and getting cablevision. Missing my large family made me gravitate to
TAGS, as well as The Waltons and Apple's Way, two other lovely family
programs with decent values and heart-warming storylines. From that time
I was hooked on TAGS and watched it whenever I could find it. Several
years ago I found out about TAGSRWC and have been a member ever since,
as well as a collector of tapes and memorabilia. Whenever anyone asks if
there really is a Mayberry, I point to my heart and then my head and
smile. I feel that those characters are my extended family and that I
can always go home again via the VCR. We even carry a tape when we
travel to get our needed dose of cheer. How about your feelings? It'll
be fun to see others' responses too. Kindest regards to all fellow
Mayberrians, Aunt Bee of Orlando

>Questions and Answers:What were all names of Andy's girlfriends.

Here's a comprehensive list, in chronological order:

Barbara Edwards, mentioned in "Opie Loves Helen." Andy had a crush on her
in the fifth grade. In real life, Barbara Edwards was Andy Griffith's wife
at that time.

Catherine Harney, mentioned in "A Guest in the House," was one of Andy's
high-school sweethearts.

Sharon DeSpain (Peggy McCay) was Andy's steady girlfriend during their
junior and senior years of high school. She moved away after graduation,
but later visits Mayberry in the episode"Class Reunion."

Opie's mother (name unknown). All we know is that Barney was the best man
at their wedding, and that Andy lost her when Opie was "the least little
speck of a baby" (revealed in the pilot episode).

Ellie Walker (Elinor Donahue), during the entire first season

Mary Simpson (Julie Adams, aka Julia Adams) in "The County Nurse"

Mary (Sue Ane Langdon) the nurse in "Three's a Crowd." Contrary to popular
opinion, this character is not called Mary Simpson, she's just Mary. Her
last name is never given.

Peggy MacMillan (Joanna Moore), in four third season episodes. Seems Andy
has a "thing" for those nurses!

Helen Crump (Aneta Corsaut) from episode 86 "Andy Discovers America" on.
They get married in the first episode of Mayberry RFD and later have a son,
Andy Taylor, Jr.

Hey folks,

I don't want to add more rules for the Digest but here's a few things you all
need to remember when you're posting messages.

1) Send your messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That will get your message to all the folks here at the Digest.

2) Don't use "HTML" in your email. Please send it as "Plain Text".
The HTML is the reason some folks emails have "equal" signs at
the end of each line and other "strange" characters you might see.

3) PLEASE do not quote the entire issue of the WBMUTBB Digest that
you are replying to. Some folks continue to reply and automatically send
the whole Digest back with their reply. This doesn't make very good reading
so make sure you don't have your email tool set to automatically quote
the message you're replying to. Just quote as much as is needed to

Subject: Theme Park

I'm a new subscriber to the newsletter, and really enjoy it every day.
I'm just wondering if there are other dreamers out there like me. If I
had the money I would build a theme park called "Mayberry USA". It would
include accurately detailed replicas of the courthouse, Andy's house, the
Barber shop, the diner, etc. The diner and drug store would be "real"
ones serving old time ice cream sodas and Blue Plate Specials (actually
served on blue china plates), the barber shop would be a real one with a
barber who tells stories and says to every boy who comes in "boy needs a
haircut!" You could also have a theater that shows non-stop episodes to
TAGS.

I call it a theme park, but it would be really more like a resort, a
place where people could step back into the simple life of Mayberry. I
think part of the reason for the success of the show then and now is that
people yearn for that simpler life, a time not ruled by pagers, faxes and
phones, but by the values that really matter, like honesty, the love of
family and friends, and community, and the simple joy of goin' down to
Wally's to get a bottle of pop and shooting the breeze with the boys. I
keep thinking of that song recorded by a couple of country singers a few
years ago, "I Wish that Life Was Like the Andy Griffith Show". I think
people are yearning for that kind of experience and would flock to
Mayberry USA. What do you think?

By the way, have you read Phillip Gulley's books, in which he speaks
lovingly of TAGS? I think he'd be a regular at "Mayberry USA".

No its not a line waiting to get into a party or nothing like that. I too
remember the party line telephone service. It was rather annoying if you
wanted to get a holt of somebody on the phone. I remember times when you
would pick up the phone and somebody down the line would say " Hey! We are
using the phone! Many times you could tell somebody had tried to pick up the
reciever and would listen in on you(very annoying). But most of the time
people were considerate and just appologized for butting in,especially if
they had started dialing (pulse, no tone then) before they had checked to see
if anyone was talking.
Shoot, It was probably a lot better service when they had the operator
that made the connections, like in Mayberry!

I also want to take this time to thank Emmitt at " These Timers Are

Opie, Ritchie Cunningham and as a director. Some of his comments and answers

Hello Friends Mayberrryans and Countryfolk

I am putting the finishing touches on a new "Lost Episode" that I will
be publishing via this Digest in sections over a period of days.
For those of you who are new, I am just a rerun watcher like you.
I do a little creative writing for fun, and since joining the Digest
I have shared a 'lost episode' called "New Stranger in Town", a short
dialogue called "Barney recites the 23rd Psalm" and another Lost episode
called "Mayberry Fife Zoo".
What I try to do is use familiar characters and some familiar sets
but take poetic license and create new situations. (for instance I once
had Otis as a tipsy desk clerk at the Mayberry Hotel) The challenge is
to paint a picture that other TAGS lovers can relate to, and picture in
their mind..or as one reader said..I could hear the voices. The easy
part is, I don't have to worry about production issues. This story will
include something you've never seen in Mayberry (to my knowledge)...
Snow. The hard part is painting the scene with just a few words. I try
to stay true to the characters and their relationships, and not mix eras
(you won't see Sam Jones with Ellie Walker). The lines are new, but may
use a few memorable phrases from real episodes. There will be lots
of familiar charactars.

True to the time of year, this will be a Christmas Episode. The "real"
Christmas episode of TAGS (#11 The Christmas Story) is my favorite. I
always wanted another Christimas-themed show so now I will have one,
sort-of.

Watch for the Title including the words 'lost episode'(I just call it
that so you can imagine it was filmed but never shown.) I'll do it in
sections so I am not a space-hog, and to keep you guessing from day to
day. Look for it starting about Monday next week. Gotta get busy
and finish the story.

to agree..andy's boyhood home..where mayberry was inspired from...mt
airy north carolina...it's beautiful country and the town has floyd's
barbershop..the old time theatre...the snappy lunch diner (although not served
on blue china plates...the pork chop sammich is the best)...there is a
bluebird diner also in town..you should really take a trip up there
during mayberry days...but actually anytime of the year is nice the
townspeople are the friendliest i've ever met and you really get the
flavor of a small town in good ole 1999..and besides you would save a

Shazzam! I'll be right in there with you (with my legs stretched under

was told that he "has not been contracted to appear." If any one has
any additional information on this please let me know. If publicity
begins to show up locally I will get the word out to everyone.

Does anyone know why they didn't continue with the first Floyd from the =
Stranger in Town episode? I'm glad they didn't - - I think the real =
Floyd was just great. Did they have any inkling that Howard McNear was =
a natural and bound to be a much better Floyd or did something happen to =
the first Floyd?

Thanks to you and yours!
