For Anita: Could it be that our Earle Hagen himself performed the whistle
for you all? How exciting! Did you take any photos?

For LauraLee: The behaviors and attitudes you brought up about Helen are
the reasons I could never quite see she and Andy together; their
relationship was always sort of an anachronism to me. As for Opie's
naivete, remember we're talking about a different time and an innocent
place. I've seen this phenomenon within my own family: my nephews in a
small town were much more child-like, naive, well-mannered and nice than
their counterparts in the "megalopolis" where I live. I can't explain it
- - I just enjoy it. I've always felt it's a shame that children today are
rushed into adulthood when the lengthy lifespan we enjoy today could
afford them a much longer carefree time of innocence. If the media
would just back off on filth we'd all be a lot better off. Anyway,
thanks for your insights; I always enjoy them!

Q. I heard that Fred Lowery whistled the theme to TAGS. Is that true.

A. From TAGSRWC founder, Jim Clark: You can nip this rumor in the bud! Fred
Lowery was a renowned whistler (perhaps the finest ever), but he may have
stretched the truth a little for the sake of a good story. He often whistled
the TAGS theme when he performed, but he did not whistle the version that we
hear on TAGS itself. That was indeed Earle Hagen. (I asked Earle about the
Fred Lowery rumors myself a few year's back, and he set the record straight.)
By the way, Fred Lowery wrote a very interesting autobiography called
"Whistling in the Dark" (so named because he was blind). --JC

>From Paul Mulik: No, composer Earle Hagen whistled it. It was the only
thing he ever whistled professionally, except for "Return to Mayberry," when
he reprised his earlier performance. People are always telling me that that
they remember when "the guy who whistled the Andy Griffith theme song" came
and performed at their school in the early 1970s. Whoever those folks saw, I
doubt if it was Earle Hagen --probably just some whistler who included the
TAGS theme in his own repertoire.

Ok Laura Lee - I read that! I think you broke Rule #2 and bashed Helen.
Have you ever taught a group of kids who were woefully behind in their
studies? You would have stomped around too I'll bet. She had to get her
bluff in on Andy - make him scared of her right away you know. When someone
calls you "Old Lady Crump" - then you've got a reputation to uphold. As far
as her getting promoted with the class, I think that had something to do with
the "Count".

OK, my second and (I hope) final try: This is a question that may have been
mentioned before, but not while I've been around here. Did Opie have
another teacher after Miss Crump?
>>

Nope. He had other teachers before Miss Crump (Miss Johnson, Mrs. Cox and
Miss Warner) but once Miss Crump arrived in Mayberry, she was Opie's teacher
right up until the end of the series, at which time Opie was in the eighth
grade (see the episode "Opie and Mike"). I suppose he probably had other
teachers for classes like P.E. or music, but we were never told their names.
Clara Edwards did teach Opie's piano lessons, but as far as we know she
never taught at school.

Apparently the Mayberry school district uses some sort of progressive
system, in which each teacher keeps the same students from year to year (at
least up until the eighth grade). I suppose later on Opie must have
attended Mayberry High School, but that would have been after the end of the
series, therefore, I cannot discuss the subject intelligently.

The Andy Griffith Theme (sometimes called "The Fishin' Hole") is available
in several song books. Just ask your local music store if they have any
books of TV Themes, and if they do it will surely be in at least one of
them.

  Howdy Folks:
It just occured to me to tell you that when I was a mere youngster, the
guy who originally whistled TAGS theme song came to my highschool and
whistled it right there in front of us in assembly. I have long forgotten
his name, but I'll bet one or two of you remember him.
>>>

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you saw an impostor. On The Show, The
Andy Griffith Theme was always whistled by its composer, Earle Hagen, and he
never did any sort of school assemblies as you have described.

I don't mean to say your memory is faulty; it appears the person you
saw claimed to be someone he was not. I've heard similar stories at least a
dozen times. In some versions, the whistler was said to be a
little blind guy. Obviously, SOMEBODY went on a tour and whistled The Andy
Griffith Theme for lots of school kids, but whoever he was, he wasn't the
real McCoy, or in this case, the real Hagen. BTW the correct title of the
theme is "The Andy Griffith Theme," not "The Fishin' Hole" as many sources
suggest.

Dear Peasants (Ha ha)
Would have written sooner but Virgil and I have been on the go every minute
since we got here and checked in at the Y. It sure isn't like Mayberry, where
they roll up the sidewalks every night. Ha ha.
Last night was really wild. We went to the arcade and played 4 games of
skeeball. There was a magic store there, and I bought a tin inkblot that
looks just like the real thing. Can't wait to put it on Aunt Bee's tablecloth
and watch her face. Ha ha.
Next, Virgil had a tie painted for him while I shot a tin bear with an air
rifle. Let me tell you ol' sharpshooter Barn really pinged up the place. The
we went into a booth where you get 4 pictures for a quarter. I was gonna send
you one, but it turned brown later.
After that we had supper at a waffle shop where the waitresses all dress
alike in peekaboo blouses, and let me tell you...{Andy couldn't read this
part aloud because Opie was listening}.
Have to close now. Having fun but money sure doesn't last. been here only
three days and already gone through $10.
Well, see you in the funny papers. Ha ha

Welcome to Mayberry Ya'll. Good to see (read about) so many new members
from all parts of the contiguous United States. I would particularly like
to welcome Shane Sessons from Kings Mtn, NC and tell you that although
I've not been to your town per se, I have visited the mountain on a couple
of occasions to go rock hunting, and enjoyed my time there immensely.

And also a big "Howdy-Do" to Gregg Jenkins of Wichita, KS. Will you marry
me? I am 44, divorced, and never watched a football game in my life. If
your idea of a good time is watching TAGS reruns, we need to talk!

Here we are again, lookin at another GREAT bunch of folks joining our little
corner of Mayberry. It sure is nice to see others joining from a body's own
territory, too. I was beginning to think there weren't any other TAGS fans
in Florida, but now I see more joining each time. I just wanted to welcome
all the new members to our family. I hope y'all enjoy this place as much as
I have for the last 3 years. Anyone who hasn't been to Mayberry Days, make
it a point to go this year. You won't regret it, and you'll have a GREAT
time meeting other members, too. We have made friends there that we will
always cherish, and we love them very much.

If any of you new members are anything like the rest of us, you'll want
to replace all the sounds that your computer makes, with TAGS sounds. Be
sure and check out TAGSRWC's "official" sounds site, "Them Timers are
Tricky".
You can get there with that link, or you can find us easy through TAGSRWC
site. Now, I'm SURE y'all know where THAT place is. LOL It's the first
place I looked for when I first got a computer. I HAD to look up stuff for
TAGS, and low a behold, I found Allan, and the rest is history. Thanks,
Allan

I was watching an episode the other day where Andy talks to Opie as Opie =
is
lying in bed, and darned if it didn't look like the shot of Andy was reve=
rsed.
The part in his hair was on his right side (the camera's left). In the r=
est
of the episode, it's on his left side. Anyone else ever notice this?

Randy
