I disagree with the hypothesis that Helen moved up with Opie's class
because of some progressive school program. It was all due to the
Count Iz Van Telecky (or however you spell it), the spirit that
Barney conjured from the great beyond. That's when Miss Crump moved
up with Opie in answer to his third wish, which Barney thought Opie
was wishing to have Miss Crump as a Mother Figure instead of a
teacher figure. Once the Count put that thing in motion, it was
beyond the power of anyone to stop it.
Other than that, my theory is it was a hungry fox come down out of
the hills.

Hey, that's a good one! I've never noticed that but I'm sure gonna' look
for it. Can't imagine how that happened but I'm sure our "resident
expert" will come up with an explanation. Meanwhile, did anyone see Opie
and Andy on Gomer today? I don't ever remember seeing this one and was
so tickled to see them all together with Sgt. Carter. I think that
bookie barber who invaded Floyd's was also a barber on Gomer's base the
other day. Such fun! Aunt Bee of Orlando

Welcome aboard to all the great new members! I'm
still pretty new myself, and so glad to get a daily
fix of TAGS talk. There's a Mayberry bond--them that
gets it, gets it. Them that don't just wonder about
us, I guess. It's fun to see such a broad mix of fans
from all over the place.
I don't know about you all, but the ongoing discussion
of the mechanics of replying, quoting, highlighting,
and everthang has made me think more than once while
reading the last few digests: "CALL THE MAN!"

I get home real late from my lounge-singin' job. I usually turn on the
TV so what should I catch the tail end of tonight? A movie I've never
seen, "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". And who do I see playing a
deputy? None other than my beau, Gomer! I had no idea. I guess I'm gonna
hav'ta rent the video and see what that Gomer's been up to!

Subject: One-shot Characters
So many of the characters from The Andy Griffith Show have become household
names, even among folks who aren't as knowledgeable or fanatical about the show
as most of us are. You mention the name Barney Fife or Andy Taylor or even
Floyd the Barber and you'll get all kinds of knowing looks and familiar smiles.
But what about the characters who only appeared briefly on our favorite show?
Who among those less "ept" in the art of TAGS trivia would know who you were
talking about if you mentioned, say, Colonel Harvey, or Uncle Ollie, or Miss
Ellen Brown? Some characters who appeared only once on our favorite show are
almost as dear to us as the "regulars" that everybody else knows.
One character that I would love to have seen more of, that I thought showed
great comedic and dramatic potential, was Big Jeff Pruitt. Alan Hale did a
wonderful job in creating the big, brash farmer's character, and he seemed to
interact so well with everybody: Andy, Barney, Thelma Lou, and even Aunt Bee. I
liked the Jeff Pruitt character so much more than the one that Alan Hale is
better known for. The character just seemed more genuine, and yet at the same
time, it was also obviously a charicature. But no matter. I still would have
liked to see more of Big Jeff. He seemed to fit the Mayberry landscape so well,
and it's a shame we couldn't have seen more of him. Does anyone else have a
favorite "one-shot" character they would like to have seen more of on TAGS? I'd
be interested in hearin' what you all have to say.
You all have a good day. I'll see ya.

Subject: What Mayberry teaches....
Hi everyone, from the Great Town of Chapin, South Carolina! Y'all may
remember me from a year or so ago (before I fell off the face of the eart=
h for
awhile) as BetsyEllie. Got that nickname by being a "dark haired woman" =
(you
know the type, although I don't personally know ANY dishtowel salesmen) t=
hat
ran for Council (One of 'em might win!) here in Chapin. I did win and to=
ok
office in January, although I am not by any means the first female to do =
so. =
We are a small town with wonderful small town values, friendships and
atmosphere. I am always tickled when someone compares our town to Mayber=
ry. =
We're growing and dealing with all the issues that arise there, but the
community spirit remains throughout. I am thankful that I live in a place=
where peace and quiet co-exist with progress and growth! There's a littl=
e bit
of Mayberry here, without a doubt! We recently adopted a resolution that=
goes
to the very heart of what we all love about Mayberry and it's people -
"Character" It's called Communities of Character, and it is a program to=
teach children (through the schools mainly), in a community-wide effort, =
about
ethics and values. Things like responsibility (got to learn to stand on =
his
own two legs), compassion (remember the baby birds?), honesty (Mr. McBeev=
ee?,
house sales vs. bike sales, cannon sales v. cufflink sales!) and so on. =
If
only all kids grew up in homes with parents like Andy and caregivers like=
Aunt
Bee, and TELEVISION like TAGS!!!!!!! But THEY DON'T. This program is an=
attempt to fill in the gaps a bit in what so many kids are not learning a=
t
home.
Now for my query. (I don't think I'm breaking any of the rules here, but=
if I
am, please forgive me.) I would like to hear from anyone else in WBMUTBB=
who
is involved on their town, city or county council, or from anyone whose
community is involved in the Community of Character Program. HAS ANYONE =
USED
TAGS (other than the church/Sunday School series we've all read about) in=
a
program like Communities of Character, and if so, how? Lets take the spi=
rit
of TAGS and use it to make things better for our future generations!! Ho=
pe to
hear from lots of folks!

I thought it was pretty cute all the reference to Mayberry in the
movie Runaway Bride, I guess he was actually making fun of the place, but
it made me smile every time he whistled the tune or called someone by a

This is a hello to all the new members, especially the ones from Ohio. I'm
tickled pink to welcome everyone to this list. We're a friendly bunch, I've
made many friends.
I'm a devoted TAGS fan from northwest Ohio. I must say I am jealous of
all you new members who live in North Carolina, especially Russell Frye who
grew up in Mt. Airy. I am fortunate to be part of a town that has many of
the qualities Mayberry did. Celina, Ohio where I live has been voted one of
America's best small towns twice. While we don't have Meyers Lake we have
beautiful Grand Lake St. Marys, Ohio's other great Lake. I'll be happy to
discuss Mayberry with anyone who wants to email me. This message is also a
test. Allan, I went into my Outlook Express and changed those options so I
hope you don't get the whole list. See ya at Bob and Diana's this summer.

Subject: Which episode
Allan, I don't know if the Digest is the proper forum for this kind
of question, but over at the Bulletin, Viola Slatt had the most interesting
question. She asked, "If you could be in any episode--but
you could not change anything in that episode--nor its out come in anyway,
which show would you choose to star in; and which character would you be or
would you choose to be an outsider (just remember the
"no change" rule)."
It's awfully hard to decide, but I chose the Barney with the amazing
microphone episode, and I guess I'd just be a member of the all-knowing
choir.
Lydia wants that first meeting over with Andy again. (I told her she
couldn't change it, but that girl never has been too good at following
rules. Still thinks she can take him away from Helen.)
I'd love to hear what the others would choose
"So deep a friendship has one man for another that no female caress
shall ever tear it asunder."
" Boy, the guy that wrote that must have been SOME kind of a nut." Barnard
P. Fife
Laura Lee Hobbs, still scratching my head over this one (how about the
"Man in a Hurry"?)
