Here's a goof that Paul may not have for his book, but then again, maybe
he has:

In The Mayberry Band, near the end, Mayor Stoner parks his car on the
street and takes a seat on a bench almost directly behind it.
He peers to his right to view the Mayberry band in action. Later as
Freddy Fleet and his band take off in their bus, the camera follows the
vehicle from the mayor's point of view and pans across to the left where
the mayor's car is. Except it's no longer there!

Sorry, William, but Jim did pass away at the age of 50 from liver cancer, I
was shocked because I didn't even know he was sick.

Hi Fellow Mayberrians!
        I have a question...something that's been bugging me for a while. I was
just a newborn when TAGS went on the air, but I seem to remember that in
the later years CBS started referring to the show as simply "Andy in
Mayberry". Is this really the case or merely a fignewton of my
imagination?

Thanks in advance for helping to calm my fevered mind!

Paul, I've studied on your response for some time here, and I can't pick up
what you are layin' down. I would think that Ben was literally explaining
why he wasn't being forgiving.
>>>

That's a good point and you may be right. There's at least one other
possible reason why he may have been so tough on poor old Sam: maybe Ben was
just trying to do his "civic duty." Barney Fife makes it clear that if John
Doe, an ordinary citizen, should see someone breaking the law, it is his
duty to make a citizen's arrest.

I'm kinda drifting here, but to those of you who work in law enforcement, is
there really such a thing as a citizen's arrest? I've always wondered about
that.

Just a word of positive praise for Stephen Spignesi's book " Mayberry, My
Hometown. " Its true that it is set up like an encycopedia, but what a
great fountain of Mayberry information it is. Great pictures, etc. go along
with it. In fact when we were establishing our chapter over a year ago it
was the Spignesi book that served as a reference to help us choose a name
for our club. Our hats are off to you Mr. Spignesi, I think a Gomer Pyle or
Mayberry RFD reference book is in order next!!!!!!.........Dave & Pattie,

Re: whether spirits were sold in Weaver's store

Paul you wrote: "If anybody in town was selling ANYTHING (legal or
illegal) that Ben Weaver also sold in his store, he wold likely have
gotten upset."
To me the prime statement is "also sold in his store." If he wasn't
selling spirits, why care that others make some at home for their
own personal use? It wouldn't in any way cut into his profit--and
that's all Ben Weaver ever cared about. Let Andy worry about the law
being observed. Now I still may be missing some logic here. So if
I am, go over it just one more time, please.
"When that man's time comes, he ain't gonna go like the rest of us.
He's just gonna nasty away." Andy talking about old Ben
Laura Lee Hobbs, gold truck watcher extraordinare and just all-around nice
person

To William Upchurch- the news of Jim Varney's death is not a rumor, I
saw it on several network shows plus hearing it on the radio that
morning. agree with you...Jim's humor may not have been very high-brow
but he was funny just the same. He had a rubber face and he was just
funny to look at! Just to remind everyone, the movie "Daddy and Them" is
supposed to be released this month; It stars Jim Varney and Andy
Griffith.

I'm gonna miss him; know what I mean, Vern?

Subject: Welcome new folks

What a great bunch of new folks again. I hope y'all enjoy our little corner
of Mayberry as much as Martha and I do, and come on over to our site to get
all the great TAGS wavs to replace the sounds on your computer. Go to
Allan's site first, though, and get that great desktop theme he has over
there, then come see us, at The
m Timers are Tricky. Please stop by our other site, too, and see the
great TAGS clocks I'm building. Emmetts Clock Shop</
A> builds clocks from the great tin signs you can purchase at Weavers, on
Allan's site, and let me tell you, the pictures of the clocks over there at
the clock shop, just don't do 'em justice, folks, but you can get the idea.

Thanks, and welcome to Mayberry, folks,

Hi,this is my first time posting to the digest, but I've
been a member for 8 mos or so. In regards to Mayberry
being dry or wet, I think the difference was legal vs
illegal liquor. For example, Moonshine is not legal,
wine is. My stepdad's from North Carolina and moonshine
was a way for some folks to make a little extra money,
and for some drinkin' folks to save a little money
(remember liquor is usually subject to a "sin" tax. By
the way, stay outta that moonshine ya'll, 'shiners would
often sweetin up a sour batch with antifreeze!!
Thanks for lettin' me say my piece and remember why we
all come here every night, cause it's a nice friendly
little town. Mrs. B
