Subject: Mayberry School Bus
My question concerns the episode where Mayor Stoner had that priceless face
looking at the band leave town on the school bus for the competition. I
just about laugh myself onto the floor every time I watch this scene. The
band struck-up that horrible tune, just a wonderful scene!! I hope me
reminding you about this scene brings a smile to everyone's face on the
list. It is really great that the Mayberry writers "can still make us
laugh" at something that was written and produced 35-40 years ago. Can you
imagine! I wonder if the show was really appreciated way back then???
Well on to my question. It is about the little school bus. What was the
make, model, passenger limit, etc.? Was this little school bus made just
for TAGS? What community in California would have ordered and paid for such
a little bus with bigger buses available? I mean, it must have very quickly
outgrown is use in a school system. I have never seen such a small school
bus. I do think the little bus fit in just great with the little town of
Mayberry. I would love to find a bus this size, and fix it up.
Thanks, Jim

Congratulations to Laura Lee Hobbs and her cable company for
acquiring TVLand in March! You're going to love it. While not perfect,
their airing of TAGS is far superior to anything WGN or TBS ever did.
Have a good time, but don't shirk your duties watching for gold trucks!

May have to pull out my old Bullets newsletter, but I remember way back when
money was being raised to help get Don Knotts star on the Walk Of Fame, we
were told if-in we were to donate money toward it we would receive an
autograph picture of Barney, just wondering what might be going on with that.
Like I say I may have to look back in my old Bullets to find who was even
handling this at the time. Shoot I would have gladly given some money to
have Mr. Knotts get his star picture or not but seeing we were told we would
get picture I sure like to know what might just ah be goin on with that.

Our beloved Barney Fife has several trademark poses, but one unforgettable
posture for
me, is what I call the Deputy duck-walk. Its that crouching, creeping
movment that
only someone as wirey and wiley as Deputy Fife can do.
I can think of four times when he used it, but I'm sure thare are more. Who
can help
me recollect the instances when Barney did this? The most memorable are:
1) In The Shoplifter episode when he was creeping around Weavers at night.
2) In the new Doctor episode when he snuck to the back of Walkers to
listen in
on Miss Ellie and the new Doc discuss a wedding.
3) (I'll withhold my others to allow some to guess)
4)

Life with Allan has NEVER been boring.
Jan
HAHAHA I bet you're right there, Jan. I was gonna write after the last
digest that posted about Allan not being boring, to ask you, Jan, to maybe
write about some of the things Allan HAS done that have been funny,
especially things that have happened while doing his "Mayberry" thing at
functions. Just a thought.

As some of you know, Rheta Grimsley Johnson is a writer for the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution and a nationally syndicated writer. They have her
articles in our local paper about twice a week and as it turns out, she's
a big TAGS fan. She had an article in Monday's paper talking about being
sick and watching daytime t.v. Here is part of what she said, "I am, after
all, a charter member of the Otis Campbell Chapter of the Andy Griffith
Rerun Watchers Association, the only club I've ever joined in my entire
adult life".// "Like any true Andy afficionado, I can quote verbatim from
most episodes, which are so loaded with folk wisdom and decency you wonder
how the show ever stayed on past the first week".
She also said she once considered moving to North Carolina because there
you can turn on the t.v. any time of the day or night and on some channel
find Andy Griffith. I'm not sure if that is really true but it sounds good
to me!

Subject: Audience feed-back
I'm curious about something. Back in the days TAGS was being shot, were the
writers and producers as audience conscious as they seem to be
today? I mean, did people write in telling who they liked on the show
and who they didn't, and did the producers respond to that pressure the way
they seem to today? For example, a while back one of the producers wrote
that the actress (Joanna Moore?) playing nurse Peggy--
who I happened to really like--was, in his opinion, very weak against
Andy and far too sexy for the small town of Mayberry, and he found her
lacking in any sense of humor. I found her really pretty and warm. And as
far as a sense of humor, she smiled a lot, and neither Thelma Lou or Helen
or Aunt Bee had much going for them in THAT area either. Most of the laughs
came from the guys on the show. But I was wondering if the show had received
mail from a lot of people who didn't respond favorably to her and perhaps
that was the problem. Like I said, just wondering.
(I stand corrected: Lydia maintains SHE has one heck of a great sense
of humor, and I better not ever forget it! She hates to laugh out loud
though. Considers it vulgar. She doesn't mind a restrained grin or a tight
lipped, half-smile.
But she hates to laugh out loud.)
"I don't gamble." Lydia--- "Never have to arrest you." Barney

loud every chance she gets

I'm sure that most loyal TAGS fans already know this: Howard McNair (Floyd)
was a regular supporting character on a very popular radio show long before
TAGS ever ran.
Howard played the voice of "Doc" on the old "Gunsmoke" radio show in the
50's.Steve Gaston

Hi Y'all;
I just saw Mayberry alumni Bert Mustin on Dragnet. No, he wasn't throwing
checkers or checker boards or even distrubing the peace. He played LA's
oldest cat burgular. See what happens when you leave Mayberry for limelight
of LA!
Y'all have a great weekend;

Here's a walk down memory lane for you Orlando residents. In reviewing some
old tapes that I recorded back in the mid '80's, I came across a commercial
promoting TAGS on WOFL-35. They themed it "Mayberry Vice" with the Mayberry
theme in the Miami Vice style and featured stills of Barney doing what he
does best! Hysterical! (sure wish they'd put it back on the air for us
TVLAND-deprived poor souls)
"Nobody leaves a wash basin like you do, Barney."

Howdy, folks!
Just wanted to drop a line and tell you all how much fun I've been having
downloading Mayberry sound bites from Emmett's WAVs, at Them Timers are
Tricky Chapter's web site. I was doing a little "cyberslacking" at work
today, and got a few nice ones on my computer there. Then, when anyone walked
by, I'd play something like "You beat evereything, Barney", "Sick as a dog,
but havin' the time of my life!" or "Pipe down, Otis". Loved it! Go check 'em
out if you haven't already. Thanks, Emmett!
This got me to thinking... what are your favorite TAGS phrases? I'd love
to hear what everyone thinks are the funniest five or so! Things like "Stop
pullin' out them horsehairs!" and "Think I'll make myself a gravy sandwich" !
I know if you're like me, you go around saying these things all the time!
Dave "Quiet Sam" Tosh (in a talkative mood- I'm all keyed up!))
