Paul,

I think the difference between getting in a car and getting on a bus is the
fact that you can walk on to or off the bus. Therefore leading to the
getting on or off part. Whereas with a car you can pretty much just kinda
slide into them. Except for maybe minivans and vans and even then if you do
any walkn in them it will be a real scrunched over kinda shuffle at best.
Now this is strictly a Theory mind ya and this Theory is a registered theory

in the making of this theory. (altho I might have injured a few brain cells
putting on that bucket) any similarity to any other theory living or dead is
strictly coincidental.

I feel we use the terms getting on and off a bus because you're still
standing for some time in both moves rather than sitting right down
inside a smaller conveyance. Aunt Bee of Orlando

I can remember, as late as the mid-1970s when I was in Driver's Ed., seeing
one of those old, brownish-tinted school films on auto safety. According to
said film, whenever entering your parallel parked vehicle it's safest to
enter on the passanger side and slide over--in those days you didn't see
many bucket seats, I guess. >>

I remember this safety feature also - but back in the 50's (yes Virginia, we
had schools back then AND automobiles). There was a motto to help us dumb
kids remember - "Curb side - safe side, Street side - suicide". Just
thought I pass on that sage wisdom.

Maybe it has something to do with British double-decker buses which are
open on the top level.

<< Anyway, here's my question: Why is it that, almost invariably,
whomever is driving the patrol car enters and exits by the
passenger-side door, sliding across the seat, rather than using the
driver-side door? >>

The answer that someone posted concerning the possibility of reflecting
the cameras in the drivers' window, if the character got out of the car
on the drivers' side, does seem reasonable.

You may have heard actors poke fun at Clint Eastwood because he
apparently insists on making just "one take" of a scene. Well, in one
of his movies, I can't remember the name right now, he has a scene
where he is talking to another actor who is sitting in the drivers'
seat of a car. If you look carefully, you can see the reflection of
the camera/cameraman in the drivers' wing-window and in the crome of
the rear view mirror on the door.

Hey guys,
I was watching the episode the other night when Andy gets paid the $l,000
for the rights to the story about his life and they all go to Hollywood.
They are wondering what to do with all this money. Floyd says to Andy, so
slyly, "Andy, you know I was thinking about selling that 2 acres that I own
outside of town". Andy, says, "No, Floyd". Floyd says, " Oh Andy, think
about it. Fill in that swamp and it would be a paradise!!!". Andy says, "
No Floyd". Floyd replys, "Andy, just put on your rubber boots and go see it
sometime." My family nearly died laughing. It had been so long since we
had seen the color episodes that we forgot that scene. So all of you that
don't think the color episodes are as good, please watch them again.
Thanks,

In answer to Paul's question on the 17th of why you get "in" and "out"
of a car but "on" and "off" a bus. If you think about the few steps
that you need to use to gain access to a bus then it makes sense that
you would get up"on" the bus steps but maybe pull yourself "in"to the
seat of a car. This also goes for exiting the bus or car, like stepping
"off" the bus steps but pulling yourself "out" of the car. Of course,
one can argue that with today's tall vans and SUV's that entering and
exiting these can be like a bus. Hope this helps.

I watched one of our favorite shows today. This one was with, Mr Tucker.
He was always in a hurry if you will remember. As Andy, Opie, and Aunt Bee
where going to the car I noticed a spot on the back of Andy's suit coat. I
wonder how many have already seen this ?

Have a good day. Say hello to you and yours !
