would try to modernize Mayberry and it would destroy the memories (even if
they're not real) of "our" lives in Mayberry. I'm not an enemy of "new and
improved" but I believe that some things are perfect just as they are.
Mayberry is one of those things. >>
Modernizing Mayberry would be like putting a tuxedo on a mule - it just ain't
fittin'. Another thing is that Hollywood, in all it's perversion, doesn't
realize that what they would consider "mild" suggestive dialog and innuendos
would be rated R in the 60s and everybody in town would be in cell #1. Even
the movies they make these days which are seemingly suitable for kids freely
use the alternative word for donkey. Now can you imagine anyone saying that
in Mayberry? Can you imagine the language and scenarios they would subject
little Opie to. Makes me want to go up an alley and holler "Fish". I hope
we can keep this one area of our lives unadulterated.

Here's some news about upcoming media stuff featuring Jim Nabors:
* USA Today will be running a story about his gospel album, probably this
Friday, April 28, or soon after. (Yes, the album is still available at

* He'll scheduled for Robert Schuller's "Hour of Power" on May 14.
* He's doing CNN's "Show Biz Today" on May 15 (it may air later)
* He's being interviewed by Mary Hart for "Entertainment Tonight" on May 16
(it may air a different day)
* He's doing ABC's "The View" and Fox's "Fox and Friends" on May 22

Subject: Maybe I'm wrong, but
Personally, I think that, done right, a TAGS movie would be a nice tribute
to a really great show. No, it won't be the same, but it would be a nice
tribute. I think some of us are getting a little carried away with the
doomsday predictions about what it could do about our memories of the TAGS.
Does anyone really believe that the Beverly Hillbillies or Flintstones
movies that have been done in the past few years were "sacreligious" or
damaging to the memories of the originals? I thought they were very well
done and respectful. I enjoyed them both.
We all want to complain that Hollywood doesn't make wholesome shows like
they did back then, so why don't we support them when they make an effort?
They're smart people and they're not going to make a violent or dirty movie
and call it "Andy Griffith." They realize that the base market they would
be targeting would be TAGS fans like us. If they made "Barney Fife Goes
Postal," the TAGS fans wouldn't support it and it wouldn't hold much
interest for people outside of TAGS fandom.
Maybe people need to see a movie where Mayberry ethics still have a part in
today's society instead of being shoved on a shelf called "the good ol'
days." As long as they're kept in the past, they won't be accepted in the
present.
By the way, going from their looks and acting abilities that I've seen in
other movies, I'd like to see Andy played by Tommy Lee Jones and Barney
played by Harry Connick Jr. They both come from Southern backgrounds and
would be great in their parts.

I grew up watching TAGS and believe it to be one of the best television show=

ever produced. Barney is my favorite character. I am currently collecting=20
videos of the show through Columbia House's club. I have been a member of th=

"Oh, What a Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice to Deceive" Chapter=20
of TAGSRWC (Terre Haute, Indiana) for the last 8 years or so, but when=20
regular meetings were dropped a few years back, I lost track of the chapter'=
s=20
activities. (I wonder if any of WBMUTBB's members belong to the Terre Haute=
=20
chapter also??) I am originally from the Clay City, Indiana, area (and=20
presently live only about 20 miles from there). It is a small town of 1,000=
=20
or less, but it received national coverage at the beginning of the year=20
because of a large sign they placed promoting Clay City as "The Mayberry of=20
the Midwest." There has been some controversy about it, but most folks seem=
=20
to think it's a great slogan for the friendly little town. I'm looking=20
forward to !
being part of the WBMUTBB chapter! =20
