It was related to the episode where Opie is on a >baseball team and they are
about to have a big game but can't find an umpire....

There are no "lost" episodes of TAGS. However, I can think of a couple of
reasons why you have not seen that particular episode very often:

A: If you watch TAGS only on your local station, perhaps that episode is
missing from their library.

2: Some stations choose to air "theme" episodes only during certain times
of the year. A good example is "The Christmas Story." Many stations will
air it only on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Throughout the rest of the
year, whenever that episode rolls around (it's number 11), they'll just skip
it. Perhaps your station chooses to air "The Ball Game" every year on
opening day, or only during the World Series.

I'm sure I could think of a lot more reasons if I was to concentrate my mind
on it. BTW, for them that don't know, this episode was based on a real-life
baseball game in which Ronny Howard was playing. His father, Rance, got
stuck being the umpire even though he knew it wasn't a good idea, since his
son was playing (to make matters worse, it was Ronny's birthday). The
closing credits state "story by Rance Howard."

I am curious...
I received an email the other day from TV Land stating that TAGS=
 was
being added to their morning line-up as well as their evening
line-up. I, for some dumb reason, must have trashed this email.=
 Did
anyone else receive a similar mailing? If so, could you post it=
 here
so we all can view it?
If I remember correctly, the morning episodes are going to be in=

color, while the evening shows the B&W.
Thanks,

Of course, you're right that there are very few African-Americans on TAGS.
In the episode where Barney nabs (actually, sits on) a criminal who vows to
get him, check out the street scene - a woman standing right behind ole
Barn. Another sighting by a dedicated TAGS fan!

I am a few days behind in checking my e-mail, so I hope that I am not
answering Ben Young's question about the episode of Andy ump'ing Opie's game,
when someone else already has. Ben, the episode isn't lost, you'll be glad
to know! This episode is one of the colored ones. TVLand has taken a short
"break" from showing the colored episodes of TAGS. They stopped in the
middle of them and went back and started from the first episode (black and
white). They assure us that the colored episodes will resume where they left
off, sometime in June. They will be shown in the mornings, in the "Twice as
Nice" shows--two episodes, back to back. What a treat!!! I'm sure the
episode, that you are referring to, will show up then.

I want to tell KathyJo, "Well said!" You are so right about Memorial Day.
Let's all show some of that Mayberry patriotism.

And Joe, I am a few days behind on the digest, but I am glad that you sent my
compliment of you on to your momma. :o) You ALWAYS crack me up and bring a
smile to my face....and you too, Laura Lee Hobbs. What would the digest be
without your delightful input? Not to leave you out, Allan, for without
you, there would be no digest. Thanks for all you do and your time, that you
so graciously donate to us.

I had to come up with a really good trivia question for y'all. Over the
years, I've asked many trivia questions on this board, but this is among
the toughest. This is for all you Johnny Coons fans.

In what episode did Johnny Coons very clearly say "Good Luck Barney"?

Being a senior citizen, I surely do remember it being called Decoration
Day, & as a child, I remember going wiih mama to the cemetary to put
flowers on the graves, one of which was mom's brother who had served in
the first world war & died when I was 7.
We were taught back then to place our right hand on our heart when the
flag came by or was presented in some way, & to stand when the flag
passes by in a parade. I'll have to admit that it disturbs me when I no
longer see people following that custom, probably because I'm from the
generation where boys a couple years older than myself gave their lives
during the 2nd World War. We can be happy for the strides that our
country has made since the sixties, one of which is the recognition of
the contribution that African Americans made duing WW ll. I was
delighed to see on the evening news one such American receiving a vey
long delayed deploma from high school, since he had left school to serve
our nation. Mayberry to me exemplifies what is good in America,& I
agree that it was written excludinhg the bad stuff of the southland, the
segrgation which existed there at the time, but I think by doing that
we can appreciate the message that they did portray. That is that we
should care about one another & be ready to help each other.

I am one of the sad souls out there (in Ky.) who cannot get TV Land on my
cable system. I can see almost anything else, including Nick at Nite, but not
TV Land, thus no Andy Griffith. And I'm heartbroken!!! I read the messages
about the shows, and I thank God my boyfriend (who gets TV Land in another
city) taped the recent marathon for me! I get my fix that way....Sigh.

<Fly your flag proudly this weekend, and every day. Visit the cemeteries,
attend your community parades and celebrations. Bring the Mayberry spirit we
enjoy here every day to the communities in which you live and work. Teach
your children to respect the flag and teach them the stories, like Andy did
with Opie and the boys, about the proud history of our nation.>

Very nicely stated Kathy Jo. Made me think of the lovely memorial wall they
have in Mt. Airy. There were too many brave soldiers from such a small town
who lost their lives for our freedoms and the freedom of the oppressed in
other countries. Now - here we are - losing these freedoms daily. For those
of us who have been around a LONG time (like me) - it's even scarier when you
have more past to look back upon, to think of how the government has taken
control of ALL aspects of our lives.
Have a safe holiday and remember to buckle up because if you don't - you are
probably in violation of the law in your state - it's not your choice.

Subject: Opie and Baseball

Hey, my friend Ben!
No, The Opie and the Baseball game wasn't a hallucination (that's MY
department). That was a real episode, and I've actually seen it once myself!
(The key to it was that Andy called Opie out during the last few seconds of
the game costing Mayberry the win.)
If I remember correctly Andy did not want the job of the umpire mainly
because his son was on one of the teams, but people insisted and then they
got mad because he made a call that went against Mayberry. Ain't that just
like people? Like Gomer said, "People sure are odd." I
remember the town acting so ugly to Andy because of his call. And then
Howard wrote a really nice piece about the responsibilities of
an umpire to do the best he can in a job filled with difficulties and close
calls; and for the people, after they have entrusted that man with such a
responsibility in the first place, to have the decency to respect his
decision whether it went
their way or not; to realize they charged this man with this job because
they trusted his integrity, and to doubt him now would only reflect on their
own character. It was a lovely piece of writing. Howard did a great job,
and, of course, the town came around.
BUT, the real kicker came when Helen got Aunt Bee off to herself and
showed her a photo she had taken at the game but had not shown to anyone
else. It was a picture taken at the moment Opie had slid into homeplate, and
you guessed it! He
was safe, and the homerun should have counted, and Mayberry should have won.
Andy HAD made the wrong call. But the game was over and Helen did the
right thing (bless her heart).
She tore up the picture, and she and Aunt Bee vowed never to tell anyone
about what they knew. In any event, all ended with love, just like it should
have.
Barney to Andy, after he thought Andy had stolen Thelma Lou: "I've seen just
enough Rock Hudson movies to know how to
sweet talk a girl... Floyd, who's in the chair? Well, get rid of 'em. I
coming over and I want the works! Witch Hazel, ode' cologne, talcum
powder...if it smells I want it!"
Get ready Miss Ellie, you're fixin' to have the ride of your life! Rock
Hudson, you had no idea what you let loose!
Laura Lee Hobbs, gold truck watcher, dime store clerker, Rock Hudson
admirer, and Barney Fife, well I'll never understand how Miss Ellie resisted
that hair-do!
