Let's consider the times we're talking about when we discuss TAGS. Just as was said on the TAGS special on TVLand, the South was not always a wonderful place to be if you were of an ethnic minority. The producers said they regret not having more ethnic actors on the show, but I think they did what was best for the times in which they lived. We praise the show because it portrayed basic truths about life in small town southern America. Take for instance, the horror of spousal abuse. In one episode, I seem to remember Andy talking about a man "whooping up on his wife." It was sort of treated as a bad thing, but not an arrestable offense. Such was life back then. That's how such things were portrayed on TAGS. The topic was treated honestly for its day, but probably very offensively by today's standards. Would you want the wonderful folks of Mayberry to treat people of African descent with the standards that were seen as normal back then? Frankly, I think it was very brave, knowing the political climate of the sixties, that they portrayed the admittedly very few people of African descent as being just normal folk, going about their business, and not the servants of white families. I think we do much better by ourselves and our society by leaving the past as it was and learning from its mistakes, not trying to "color" it to make it reflect today's values system and saying "Tsk, tsk, TAGS just didn't have enough minorities in it." For its day, it was pretty revolutionary in its portrayal of the minorities we did see. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 09:16:09 CST From: "The Hendersons" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Jim Linsey's "MULTI-DOUND" guitar Has any one ELSE out there noticed in the 2 episodes (with Jim Linsey and BOBBY Fleet and his Band with a Beat) when Jim Linsey gets angry and decides to play his guitar to show BF that he really CAN play...that JIm L. is holding an acoustic (NON-electric) guitar and gets Multiple ELECTRIC guitar sounds from that single one? Just like clockwork, my dear guitar-playin' hubby says, "Now look at that! Jim is playing an acoustic guitar and there are 2 guitar sounds coming out of Jim's guitar:electric lead and electric rhythm! Amazing what they can do on TV!" In yesterday's epilogue( when Bobby Fleet asks Jim back into his band <they were in the court house> )there was a whole lot of music comin' out of Jim , Andy and Bobby: electric lead AND rhythm guitars, upright bass, and drums to name a few! wow! It was related to the episode where Opie is on a baseball team and they are about to have a big game but can't find an umpire. Somehow they pick Andy for the job but he doesn't want to do it. During the ballgame, Andy calls Opie out at the plate or by strikeouts or something and everyone in the town gets mad at Andy for it. I loved the episode but I have only seen it on twice in about 8 years. I realize that I probably missed it several times but it still seems to be kind of a "lost episode". Is this the case or is it just me? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 12:03:29 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Memorial Day Hi everyone .. As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, I just wanted to mention the quiet patriotism that is present in TAGS and remembered by holiday celebrations such as the one we'll observe on Monday. One of my favorite scenes from the Return to Mayberry movie was Andy and Barney at the flagpole! For those of you who may not know the origin of Memorial Day, it was originally established after the Civil War as a day to decorate the graves of the soldiers who fought in the war .. some of you may remember calling the holiday "Decoration Day". Andy and Barney were both veterans, though they didn't talk about it much, the same way that a lot of veterans don't talk a lot about their war experiences. But we all owe our freedom and security to the brave men and women who were willing to give up their time and perhaps even their lives to defend the things that are so important to us. Fly your flag proudly this weekend, and every day. Visit the cemeteries, attend your community parades and celebrations. Bring the Mayberry spirit we enjoy here every day to the communities in which you live and work. Teach your children to respect the flag and teach them the stories, like Andy did with Opie and the boys, about the proud history of our nation. When the weekend is over, spend some time on the porch, cranking the ice cream maker, strumming a guitar, and singing a few of the old songs ... Have a safe weekend, if you're travelling .. I'll leave the porchlight on until everyone is home again! I saw it on the Quotes section of the official website and I am drawing a blank on this one...kind of embarrassing since I used it in my sig file...thanks in advance. >> It's from the episode, "The Rumor". Barney was trying to get Andy and Helen to go out to dinner with him and Thelma lou, so everyone else could get the house ready for Andy and Helen's engagement party, which Barney of course got the wrong idea when he saw Andy and Helen at the jewelry store. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 12:41:28 -0400 (EDT) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Suzanne Burgess) Subject: Favorite TV Characters Excuse me, I had a senior moment the other day when I wrote about the Favorite TV Characters ballot in Biography magazine. For any of you who don't get the magazine or want to buy one on the newsstand, you can go to www.biography.com and help put Don Knotts at the top of the male character list. All of you good people have a great Memorial Day weekend, just pause for a little bit to thank those men and women who have given their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom. Please, folks, don't >> The producers and directors tossed around the idea of having a regular African American on the show but it was never carried out. It was explained that this was the 60s in the South and it wouldn''t be realistic. As a matter of fact I don't remember seeing any regular A.M's in sitcoms of that era except Rochester of Jack Benny and he was a butler. I saw another A.M in the crowd scene last night in "Barney gets his man". Even James Carville said TAGS was a time we could all just escape from everything for 30 minutes. He was speaking of the turmoil of the 60's. I guess thats why you never heard VietNam mentioned either. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 14:26:17 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Worse Than Andy's Otis Hangover Concoction In a message dated 5/26/00 6:59:47 AM Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << The "Me-me-me-me" ads are obviously targeted for a large variety of people, with singers ranging from opera to Broadway to rap to country (Faith Hill and Lace have been in a couple). >> Hey To All, Just got back in town. Well, I guess they hit this target in the bullseye as I can't seem to avoid this commercial when I am in TVLand but it grates on my nerves so bad I have to mute my television. If I'm sure of anything it's that I won't be the only one to answer your question, but here goes anyway. Barney's question, "It ain't a whim if you have to put on clean underwear," came from the episode where he thought Andy and Helen were engaged and he was stalling them for their "surprise" party. My favorite quote from that episode came from my beloved Gomer(just platonic, Miss Poovey, so don't go having a hissy fit; I know how you are about your Gomer, and I certainly don't want you after me again; you are sweet and lovely looking, but boy can you get riled over that man!) anyway as I was saying, my favorite quote came when Gomer said to Barney, "What a dumb trick. Barney, don't you ever call be dumb again! Nice party. But what a dumb trick!" Kinda makes up for the time Barney called him a boob. 'Cause Gomer ain't no boob. He's nice, real nice. And this is Laura Lee Hobbs, watching out for gold trucks and clerking in the dime store out in Al, making little money and dreaming big dreams Barney to Miss Ellie: "I feel sorry for you, baby. You had your chance to fly with me, but you weren't woman enough to take it. Now the balloon has gone up without you." ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #158 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
