Favorite Lines WBMUTBB CHAPTER MEETING TONIGHT Andy's grumpiness Who would be left on the island?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 21:51:50 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Opie's name I went to FAQ's but that's just a theory. I know he wrote his name Opie but I've seen other instances where someone takes their initials and turns it into a name. I once worked at a hotel where some of the staff called me by my initials JJ and someone referred to me in a memo as JayJay. Hence my theory. But I guess we'll never know for sure. It seems like he always steps in (stuff) and comes out smelling like a rose. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 00:19:54 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Funny scenes The scene that cracks me up is the one where Andy, Helen, Barney and Thelma Lou are playing bridge and here comes Goober, dragging that albatross with him, better known as Lydia Crosswaithe who is from Greensboro in case you thought she was from Lydia. Anyway, they are all sitting on the couch looking like the Culhanes in HeeHaw and the conversation is just incredible. Every time I see this scene, I laugh like it was the first time. I don't know how they managed to film this without rolling in the floor. Later, when they go for a ride and Andy tells Goober to tell Lydia to quit hanging her head out the window like a dog - I just lose it. I'll tell ya - it ain't safe to sit near me. Linda - the giggling Goober ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 00:31:29 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Mary Alice << I noticed when Andy and Helen and Opie and Mary Alice pulled away in the squad car Andy appeared to be making a u-turn! Good thing Gomer wasn't home on leave...citizen's arrayust! citizen's arrayust! >> Anyone notice who Mary Alice actually was? She was listed in the credits as Suzanne Cupito, but she's better known as Morgan Brittany, who played Katherine Wentworth on "Dallas". Dixon =========== "Come to Mayberry folks! Gateway to Monte Carlo! Boy, once word gets out they'll be swarming in here with their horn honking and their jaywalking and their litterin'..." - --Barney Fife ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 00:41:37 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Funniest scene ever << I quickly figured out its not so easy to single out one particular incident from the literally thousands of comedy gems the show produced>>> No it is not...but I do have a list of my own... <<However, I finally decided that the scene which strikes my funnybone the hardest is the one in the motorcycle episode (I'm shying away from titles so as not to get yelled at if I get them wrong) when the old men loafing in front of the courthouse disconnect the sidecar from Barney's cycle (pronounced "sickle"). >> That one's a classic, in fact it often gets repeated on clip shows (like the CBS 50th Anniversary special in 1978). I would put it on my list too. << Two other scenes which I also love are Otis taunting Barney by singing "Barney's in jail!" >> "Hey Barn you know what this means?" (bangs cup) "It means we're breaking out at midnight! AH-HAH-HAH-HAH..." <<and Barney trying to teach Goober the finer points of love by spying on Andy and Helen. >> "Unless I miss my guess you got yourself a kiss coming up right about now..." My picks, in no special order... **all of the ones listed above **from Barney's Sidecar--the hand reaches from under the station wagon and snatches Barney's chalk marker away from him; also Aunt Bee comparing him to a Nazi and suggesting having him killed...heck the *whole* episode... **Andy pretends to read the words "Please use gloves" off Barney's after shave bottle **Andy catches Barney saying "Cock-a-doodle-doo!" to Juanita **the Fun Girls ask Opie if he's going to grow up to be a sheriff...or a gangster (also Andy says "Oh shut up Bernie, just shut up!") **Gomer placing Barney under citizen's arrest **Gomer talks about thinking with the bucket on his head **My personal favorite...Barney says "There's something in the air, I can smell it" and Gomer says "Oh that's the diner, they always have corned beef and cabbage on Thursdays". If I think of any more it will take up the digest... Dixon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 02:29:59 -0400 From: Keith Grubb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Which scene strikes your funnybone? > Two that come to mind: 1. Any of them where Barney is drilling his temporary deputies (Goober, Jud, Otis, Floyd, et.al.) 2. When Barney and Arnold Winkler stick out their tongues at each other."Barney, Let's try to keep this on an adult level." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 06:18:23 -0400 From: Steve Caswell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Favorite Lines A few of my all-time favorite lines: "I couldn't give Otis a sobriety test last night - he was too drunk!" -- Barney Fife "Ain't you got a jack?" -- Goober Pyle, at the Sheriff Candidates Debate, responding to Barney's description of the squad car trunk contents "I wonder what causes that" -- Barney Fife's reaction to Malcolm Tucker's ranting over the Mendlebright sisters tying up the phone on a Sunday afternoon Just about any line delivered by Briscoe Darling/Denver Pyle What is remarkable about most of the classic lines in TAGS is not necessarily the line itself, but the situation surrounding the line and the tremendous acting abilities used to deliver Steven F. Andy himself might've not even seen the real reason he lost interest in the show. Of course he missed Don since they were so close. But he maybe didn't even realize the factor of "playing off of another character" the way Dixon has. Such insight among us Mayberrians, huh?! I love it! Thanks Dixon. (I know, I know, Mayberrians would never vote each other off, but let's just pretend.) Who would be left at the end of a month?>> That's easy. Aunt Bee, hands down. Why? Because she'd be so busy taking such good care of everyone else, no one would ever vote HER off the island!
