(Can't remember the name of the episode). "And Gomer, get that gun out of your mouth!" I love this episode. >> That would be episode #95, "The Big House". It's a favorite of mine too, and includes two other classic scenes: 1. Barney gives his "Now here at the rock" speech. 2. Barney says "There's something in the air, I can smell it", and Gomer's classic reply is "Oh that's the wind from the diner. They have corned beef and cabbage on Thursdays." I recently watched my video of "Thirty Years of Andy," the reunion show that aired ten years ago. In a little interview clip, Aneta talked about how the TAGS actors liked each other and got along so well. She said that after a long day of shooting, instead of going straight home, she and Betty and others would go backstage, sit down, kick off their shoes, and gab for an hour or two. About the Buddy Ebsen question -- the episode is titled "Opie's Hobo Friend" and originally aired on Nov. 13, 1961, which would have been early in the second season. That's priceless! What >confidence.....what "I told you so".... a true moment of Fifedom That's a good one. Here's another that I saw last night. We all remember= that Thelma Lou has a funny/guilty look on her face while Barney's = wearing her lipstick on his face in "Up in Barney's Room" when Barn and = Thel were playing with the lightswitch at the courthouse and Opie thought= Barney's face was bleeding (You gotta get you a room, Barney) However, = last night's episode in the epilogue where Andy and Helen asked Barney = to come out on the porch and sing "The Fox" and Thel's expression was = even funnier. Apparently, Barney and Thelma Lou had been in the house = "making up" when Andy opened the door to holler for them. Thel came = stumbling out with a the funniest tight mouthed dazed expression and = Barney had kissy marks all over his face. =20 Yeah, he said third party - it's not dirty you know. What season did it appear and how long before the Beverly Hillbillies? Thanks much, D. from NJ >>> That's episode 38, "Opie's Hobo Friend." It aired less than a year before the premiere of The Beverly Hillbillies. Here's an interesting bit of trivia: the very next TAGS episode, "Crime-Free Mayberry," was written by Paul Henning. In that episode, one of the crooks utters the line, "They think they've stuck oil!" A few months later, Paul Henning creates a new series in which "hillbilly" Buddy Ebsen strikes oil. I'm not sure how many people are aware of Tom Shirley's on-line chapter "Low Down Pesky Buzzards". It's a gooden and complete with pictures of us members and everything.......Join up so's we can see what ya'll look like. It's nice having a face with a name. And speaking of names, if'n I'm not being too pushy, is it to much to ask people to add their name after their message? It's kinda hard to figure out who you are with coded email addresses. And if'n you're to shy to give your real name then find a character on TAGS to relate to, like Goobalong and Laura Lee and Aunt Bee 2. At least we'll know what to call you instead of just plain "nut!" I thank ya, Harriet, in search of other chicken thieves and whatnots (not the lady in the bank or one of those Historical Society ladies) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 08:23:57 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Ange's girlfriends I don't want to open up a can of worms, but I just wanted to take a poll of the group. Of all of Ange's girlfriends, who do you like best? My vote would be for Peggy the nurse. I think of all the women Andy dated, she seems the most natural. Plus, she talked like she was really from the South, calling New Orleans "NewAwlins" like it should be said. I ain't got nothing agin Helen, but a lot of the time, when she would get mad, it seemed kind of cartoonish, whereas Peggy seems genuine. At any rate, I read that Andy Griffith was not very comfortable with most of the women who provided him with female companionship. PhoneHimAl "We DEFY the Mafia!" P.S. Did Peggy (Joanna ?) ever act in anything else? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 09:10:07 -0700 From: "Janet K. I actually enjoy going through the list of subject lines before I begin reading the postings! Then last night I posted a message using the reply button, and - -- guess what? -- I forgot to change the subject line! Dirty me, dirty me, I'm disgusted with myself!! Can any of you cook hamburgers and not think of Floyd's classic line -- "Maude, Al, if those hamburgers are ruined I won't be responsible?" Or do any of you have wonderful but moody teenage daughters who don't need the occasional dose of "Naomi, you're a strange woman." Like all of us in our little online Mayberry neighborhood, our family makes it a point to use at least one TAGS line everyday, and it's amazing how naturally they seem to fit into conversation -- you don't have to strain at all! The other day I was over at my parents' house getting instruction from my dad on how to feed his Japanese carp in his water garden. ("We consider we're doing folks a favor when we kill a carp.") Dad wanted to make sure I knew where the extra house and car keys were kept -- and I kid you not, when he said, "the keys are in the drawer," my 16-year-old daughter replied, "maximum security, keys in the drawer." My dad didn't get it at first, but said they'd decided to keep them there rather than on a hook by the garage door because it was safer. We told him he was just following the Mayberry Jail security procedures to a T. No matter how frustrating, sad, or hopeless life seems to get somedays, a Mayberry moment (or better yet, block party Mondays on Nick at Nite) can lift you up! Bless you, MrsLesch ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 11:31:58 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: More funny moments Love the scene where Gomer becomes "Opie Taylor, Sr." and Barney is "Dr. Pendyke". Gomer's fascination with Barney's voice disguise is such a classic. When Gomer tell's him "That's good" and "I wish I could do my voice like that" - I completely fall apart and then when Gomer deepens his voice and says "Good day, gentlemen", they have to put me in a strait jacket. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Linda - this Goober's slapping my knees. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 11:37:06 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Favorite scene and unfired gun One of my favorite scenes is from "Barney's First Car" when the steering wheel "attacks" Barney as he is driving down the road, Thelma Lou screams and Andy says, "I don't think I've ever seen anthing like that before!" As always the script and the delivery by the cast makes it hilarious. Also, Barney drew his gun on a rabbit in (I think) "Barney Gets His Man". Right after this scene is another that shows what TAGS is all about. Barney is trying to tell Andy that he only accidently captured the criminal the were searching for. Andy of course already knows Barney's predicament, but he simply gives Barney a look that seems to say, "No problem, I understand, now lets keep going." That's Mayberry. David Cantrell ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 09:31:27 CDT From: "DEBORAH DUBOSE" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Meredith MacRae (?) Did the lovely actress who just died, Meredith MacRae, (?) ever appear on TAGS? I thought I read a post where someone mentioned she played a nurse on one episode, but I cannot remember seeing her. If she did, would someone please be kind enough to tell me which episode that was? Thanks a lot. Also, awhile back, people were discussing the many times Alan Melville (absolutely sure I misspelled his name, just used the "Moby Dick" guy,) but he played Sam the butcher on "The Brady Bunch;" and he played one of the truck drivers who intimidated our Barney; the guy who swept trash out onto the street & then threaten to beat Barney up for giving him a ticket; the sergeant who turned down Ernest T. for the army; and just a host of other parts). But I can't remember if anyone mentioned this roll. He was also the man who picked up Mrs. Lesh at the corner. If it has indeed been mentioned before, please excuse me. And if it hasn't, well, chalk one up for Laura Lee! And, I'm also interested in learning more about Aneta Corsaut and Betty Lynn. Andy never says one word about them, and even in the biographies, nothing was made mentioned of them, even though Aunt Bee was discussed recently and the fact her relationship with the others on the cast (esp. Andy) didn't always run smoothly. It makes you wonder if there were some real problems, or if Andy is just the sort of guy who keeps his thoughts to himself. Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk, gold truck watcher, and, like Barney, owner of an Inquiring Mind Barney helping Goober on his first date with the charming Lydia: Goober: I don't know what went wrong. I followed all the instructions." Barney: "Goober, you were on a date. You weren't taking medicine." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 15:07:49 -0400 From: "Tara Bull" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Happy B-Day Barney A little bird told me that today is Barney's birthday! Is it so? If so, happy birthday to the best darn deputy we've ever seen. Maybe we can all chip in and buy him a stainless steel watch amd inscribe something on the back... Lots of luck to you and yours, ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 14:49:47 -0500 From: Keith Miles <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Favorite Scene Lots of great scenes to pick from, but my all time favorite is probably from "Mountain Wedding". Andy & Barney have to leave at 4 a.m. to drive up to the Darlings' cabin. Andy comes in the courthouse where Barney spent the night in the back room. Andy goes through everything he can think of to wake up Barney, but to no avail--finally, out of frustration, Andy snaps his fingers, and up pops Barney wide awake! Some great facial expressions by both Andy and Don in that scene. Honorable mention to the sermon scene in "Sermon for Today"...again, great acting and expressions by everyone in the congregation. Opie Taylor, Sr. Barney: All you have to do is snap your fingers and I'm awake! ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #245 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
