Subject: Marijuana in Mayberry?!?!

You know, last night I was watching the episode where Barney was suspicious of
Sam Becker cause he farmed at night, bought strange things at the store, and
wouldn't talk to anybody in town. I'd seen that one a million times, but it
never registered with me that Barney thought Sam might have been growing
marijuana! Marijuana in Mayberry?!?! I know that Barney was a happening guy,
but shouldn't Mayberry be safe from the encroachment of illegal substances
(except a little moonshine to keep Otis happy)? I was just flabbergasted and
speechless, and believe me, that doesn't happen often...Thank goodness Sam
wasn't
into anything funny and was a sweet and considerate family man with Lilly and
little baby Andy Becker. Barney had enough trouble handling "mulberry
squeezins"...he could never deal with drugs!

I just wish that I knew exactly who the character your always talking about
is. I know I surely have seen him hundreds of times. Can somebody tell me
anything that would call him to my attention.

episode where Weavers was being-robbed-by the little old lady in the opening
scene where they were talking about Myra Koonse they were in a 1950's type

I am new to the list and hope that some of you out there will be able to =
help me. I am remembering an episode where Barney wants to sing a solo. =
He is convinced that his voice is too powerful for the sound system and =
he should sing softer. Meanwhile there is someone else back stage with =
a mic. What I want to find out is-- What was the song, and who was the =
singer back stage?
We were talking about it at work and are coming up with different =
remembrances.
Also, I tried at Weavers, but they are sold out of Goober =
Beanies--anyplace else that I might find one?
Thanks, Bonnie

Well....Mr. Schwump may have been shy and somewhat introverted....but I
recall the opening scene of a lodge meeting when Schwump was drawing a
rioter as the camera closed in on the frosty beverage.....Schwump's hand
was steady....and the frothy brew was drawn with machine-like
precision! Long live the memories of Schwump! He may not have spent a
lot of money on that toupee but he had a nice heart!

Subject: My meeting with Don Knotts

I went to see Don Knotts yesterday at a casino in Blackhawk, CO. He was
there as the headliner for a charity poker game. No, he wasn't playing.

Prior to the game, he was in a side room having his picture taken and
giving autographs for employees, media, and sponsors. Since I fell into
the sponsor category, this is where I got to see him.

For those of us who enjoy him in TAGS, or any other work he has done, it
was quite a thrill to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him.
I'm going to frame the autograph and picture and put it in my bar right
next to my other autographed picture of him.

Having said that, I must say that I felt like he wasn't really enjoying
himself. Maybe he wasn't feeling well, maybe he just received some bad
news, maybe he was just tired. I'm too big of a fan to let this one
meeting bother me, I'm just reporting on my impression.

Because the group has had so much discussion lately about the pickle
episode, I thought I would ask him about that one. I told him we had
been talking about Opie and what seemed like a dislike for pickles and
asked him if he remembered anything about it. As much as I was hoping to
report back to the group about something REALLY BIG, I must say that he
didn't remember Opie having a spit bucket or anything like it.

So that's that. I enjoyed it and will remember the brief meeting fondly
each time I see our picture together.

- -All the best to you and yours.

Re The Johnny Coons' matter
All I know is that Tom Jacobs looks a whole lot more like a Johnny Coons
than he does a Tom Jacobs, but that's just me and Lydia's opinion. I feel
like it's the end of an era when there'll be no more "Johnny Coons"
posting. Always did like to see those highlights.

Our chapter is NOT involved in this event in any way other than that we'll be
there to enjoy it. It should be a great show and I'd recommend getting your
tickets ASAP.

any
such thing discussed here, I assume that is not the case but it brings up an
interesting thing. If we ARE indeed involved in this event, don't we want
everyone to attend? And since we do, don't we want to make it easy to obtain
passes to it? Of course, dialing a number and asking for them is pretty
easy,
I guess...haven't got mine yet. Oh well, I was just wondering about that and
thought you might could shed some light on how these things work. As I said
earlier, this is my first "TAGS"-related event. Thanks in advance for your
 insight!! Love the Digest!!!! >>

I have had the pleasure to be in touch with one of our newest members whose
father retired from a sales career with Viacom. She was kind enough to talk
with her father about some of the questions I asked her and agreed that the
Digest would enjoy reading it as well. I asked about Viacom editing the
shows and any other 'trivial trivialities' that he thought would be
interesting.

Viacom does edit the shows for commercials. Some of the stations then, do
some editing so, there is no way of knowing who did the editing.

The show was number 1 in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. It, of course
was popular in the south. This is primarily where my Dad's territory was.

Normally the show would be bought from Viacom, for 6 runs each of the 249
shows.

The Merchandise and Promotion Department works with each station. They also
sent a Promotional Package when a station bought a run. It contained
newspaper advertisements, and, arranged for public appearances of the stars.

Viacom has the licensing of all selling of TAGS merchandise.

He did meet Goober in a restaurant one time.

After 8 years of the original TAGS, Andy wanted to pursue other avenues.
Since they were in the top 10 at the time, Mayberry RFD was made. Viacom
does not sell Mayberry RFD.

Thank you to Carol McCormick and her father for sharing that with us.

Re which character would I choose to be

Well, I really wanted to be Mary Grace, but since she has already been
chosen (doggone you, Miss Poovey) I will decline that one; and I thought
about the lovely Nurse Peggy, but she doesn't really have any meat to her
roles; so then I thought about my beloved Lydia, but gee whiz, she's
such an albatross to drag around; so I thanked and I thanked, and then it
hit me. Who else would be as fun to play but the one and only: Big Maude
Tyler/Claris Tyler/Maude Claris Tyler/Annabelle Tyler/Ralph Henderson.
Oh, I'd get to do the tango with Barney. And I get to hear him tell me,
"You're beginning to get to me," and look at me with those "come hither"
eyes of his. And don't try to tell me that a little bit of Big Maude wasn't
really beginning to get to Barney either. That lady has her
charms! I've watched women's prison movies and I know that women inmates
learn all kinds of charming ways. It provides as good an education as some
charm schools I've heard of.
And then Barney gets to tell me to relax as he leads me to the land of
rhythm and pleasure! Of course, it ends with Andy cuffing me and taking me
back to the Big House. But for a blissful few minutes, I'm in the company of
two beautiful and delightful men: Big Barn and Fabulous Floyd. What girl
could ask for a better day than that?

Is there any chance at all that Mr. Schwump was actually Johnny Coons? I
mean after all, Johnny wasn't who we thought he was but he must have been
somebody. Just trying to solve a mystery without subscribing to a
detective magazine. (My wife didn't like the pictures because I am
married.)

Hello to everyone in Mayberry -

I just received the "The Prize Fighter" video from Amazon.com, and at a
better price than I was first given. The cost is $9.99 plus shipping. You
can't beat this for over an hour of simply hilarious Don Knotts. This tape
is excellent quality, very shape and clear images.

Amazon will have "Private Eyes" ready for shipping on October 10, 2000. No
price was given as of today's date.

Everyone please keep in mind, prices for these tapes, in used condition, are
upwards of $45.00 and $50.00 on various internet auction sites.

Thanks, Jim

thought maybe someone else might remember this also.
