About who I would I like to be on the Andy Griffith show the person I think I
would like to be would be Gomer,(on any episode)why because Gomer is like a
child he never gets mad at anybody, and he thinks the best about everybody he's
always saying"he's a wonderful human being",he hasn't a care in the world,and
he's easily entertained(the way he thought Goober had such great talent). And
boy could he dance,he was also very talented when it came to cars.I don't know
if I would've joined the Marines or not,but Gomer always had that childlike
quality to him that's what made him an essential part of the show.Golllllly and
goodluck to you and yours,Mayberry fan in Louisville,Goober says hey.

I wonder if Count Istvan Telecky had a brother, Sam. While researching a
story on pioneer gold coin production by a gold assaying firm in California
run by two Hungarian immigrants (I'm a senior staff writer for a coin hobby
publication) I came across a Count Samuel Teleki (1854-1916). Samuel was an
explorer and the first white man to reach Mt. Kilimanjaro. He named Lakes
Rudolph and Stephanie for the emperor's children. Makes me wonder.

Hey, I've heard that there are folks out there (maybe on the web?) whose
hobby is making architectural blueprints for the "homes" of television
families. Has anyone seen any of those? I know the Taylor home and
Mayberry jail sets changed a bit over the years; I'd be interested to see
if any conceptual drawings exist.

Yeah, boy!

Well James, you'll have to get your VCR and TAGS tapes to search for him,
but a few of the "high spots" in the career of Tom Jacobs (formerly known
as Johnny Coons) are:

• "How did they do it, Sheriff?" - His only credited line, from "Goober
  Takes a Car Apart"
• He's the bulldozer operator and helps Andy move some of Mr. Frisby's
furniture in "Aunt Bee, the Crusader"
• He's the painter next door to the Taylor home who brings his ladder over
to Otis' window when he's trying to escape in "Aunt Bee, the Warden"
• He's the feller who witnesses Barney taking off Mrs. Kelsey's dress in
the middle of the sidewalk "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a
man take off a dress before?" in "The Bank Job"
• He's the angry customer (honking his horn while sitting in his car) who
Gomer ignores while telling Jase the Birdie Blush story in "Gomer, the
  Houseguest"
• He's also the one who witnesses Barney spying on Miss Ellie and Dr.
Benson from the sidewalk outside the drugstore. When Barney sees that
he's caught, he makes out like he was measuring the wall. This is from
  the episode, "The New Doctor".

Tom Jacobs is seen in a whole LOT of episodes, but he's usually just
passing by, sometimes alone, sometimes with another person. Once you get
his face in your mind, it's fun to try and spot him in crowd scenes. Hope
this helps, bud.

Doug "Rafe Hollister" Garretson
"Do you wanna try that again, or do you think you got it?"
"I got it."

Subject: Re: My meeting with Don Knotts

Hello Chip and Everyone!

I am new to this list, so let me introduce myself. My name is Alan Davis
and I live near Denver, Colorado. I have been a fan of the Andy Griffith
Show for as long as I can remember.

I met Don Knotts in Black Hawk this last Saturday too. I also got the
impression that he might not be feeling quite himself. At Don's age of
76, I suspect he might have been feeling a touch of elevation sickness
since Black Hawk is 8056'. I noticed he seemed to be a bit winded after
coming up the stairs. I formerly worked in the tourist industry in some
of the mountain towns, and elevation sickness is quite common for older
folks. Nonetheless, it was wonderful to meet Don, get his autograph and
have my picture taken with him. I hope he is doing well.

When I saw the crowds in the restaurant for the "question and answer"
session with Don, I decided getting his autograph meant a lot more to me,
so I went and stood in the autograph line instead. I'm really glad I
did, because the line was really long and he was only supposed to sign
from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. I suspect a lot of people didn't get his
autograph. I got one of the autographed photos of Don and I took my
"Ghost and Mr. Chicken" video and he signed that for me. I wish I had
heard about the event earlier, because I would have found a Barney Fife
photo for him to sign.

Chip, did you go to the Q&A session? I heard that someone asked him
about his favorite episode of TAGS, and he said "The Pickle Story" and
"Barney and the Choir" were his favorites. Were there any other
interesting questions he answered?

Alan

Looks like I've stumped you all again. My latest trivia question was:

Which TAGS actor was a champion gymnast?

Nobody has gotten the correct answer, so here are two hints:

1. Reckless driving
2. This one is a real gem!

Hellooo Dollll,
Someone posed the question that if you could be any character from TAGs, who
would you be and from what episode--Well, I think my answer is probably the
most obvious of all. I would be Daphne from the two Fun Girl episodes. Her
voice slays me every time I hear "Hellooo Dolll", which I might add that I
do quite well when laryngitis sets
in. ;-)

I also like that Andy doesn't know how to react to her whenever she comes on
to him, and that neither one of the boys know exactly how to deal with women
who are faster than Helen and Thelma Lou. Their facial expressions are
priceless.

I also saw Denver Pyle in Bonnie and Clyde this Saturday on AMC.

Speaking of names (We were, weren't we?), ain't Schwump the most perfect
name you ever heard of? Reckon where it comes from? And though we may never
know this gentleman's real name (but interesting theory about it being
Johnny Coons), doesn't he look like a Schwump? But then Tom Jacobs
looked just like a Johnny Coons until somebody destroyed that dream!
I ain't never known anybody actually named Schwump, have you? But Andy
may have known somebody by that name, or maybe it's just a variation on
a name. I'd really like to know. In any event, it's one of my favorite
Mayberry names, and no show does names any better than Andy does.
Take Viola Slatt. Ain't that perfect for a town gossip? Can't you just
picture her walking down the street with a flowered hat perched on her
head, all eager looking, thin like Barney, hair in a bun, walking real fast
like; not a mean person, just an intense person. Eager to know
everything about everybody. And I picture her always wearing a flowered
hat. And as she talked, the flowers on her hat moved back and forth, faster
and faster depending on how good the gossip was. But then, you may picture
her completely different.
One of the funniest--and true to its Southern roots--aspects of this show is
the names Andy gave to the characters. The names brilliantly reflected their
time and location. At least that's what I think.
Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk & gold truck watcher extraordinare and
owner of a pretty good name herself
Barney: "I ain't standing in a stag line with old Mr. Perkins and a bunch of
slumped over teenage boys." (Wonder what Mr. Perkins looked like)

Subject: Who I would want to be in what episode

It took me a while on this question also. My first inclination was to say
that I wanted to be Andy when the Manicurist wanted to marry him or Barney
when Miss Ellie threw herself at him in the back of the drugstore, but then
more rationale thought took over. (typical male, right) . I apologize in
advance if this is a repeat...but I would want to be Malcolm Tucker in "Man
in a Hurry". You see my life is a lot like Malcolm's. Run here, do
this..run there do that hurry hurry hurry.
I wrote in a couple years ago about when my family was returning
from a vacation and our van broke down. We had a Man-in-a-Hurry type
experience in a small Ohio town. It wasn't Sunday, but we had to wait 'til
the next day for Wally to get the part. The "Wally" in this case loaned us
a personal car for the evening. We stayed in a hotel, but had been offered
to be put up by a nice man who stopped to check on us along the roadside.
It was the most relaxing evening of our vacation...we had no plans, no place
we had to be, just relaxed. I have often wondered what it would have been
like if I had taken my family of five to stay at that nice Mayberry-like
man's home, as offered.
So...given a second chance, I would be Malcolm. I would sit on
the porch and sing about the Little Brown Church, and I would practice my
apple pealin' in one piece. I would get to know the nice boy who would loan
me his room to sleep on an ironing board between two chairs. I would spend
a few minutes in the kitchen of that wonderful matron Aunt Bee who fixed the
great food. I would go down to the filling station with Gomer and offer to
take his picture inside my car. I would try to capture some of his joy that
comes from helping others. I would eat hearty.
The next day, while Wally was checking the car, I would sneak off
with a plug wire, give him a wink, get on that fancy car-phone and tell
those busy business people that I had car trouble and would be another day
late. Then I could sit on that bench with Floyd and have a leisurely cup
of coffee..maybe go inside his shop for some checkers with the boys. I'd go
in the courthouse and pull up a chair, put my feet up and just see who, of
the wonderful townsfolk, would come by. Surely Otis would stumble in, maybe
the Darlings would come to town. Perhaps I would hear glass breaking and
know that Ernest T was in town. I'd ask to ride around in the squad car
with Andy and Barney. Maybe we'd stop and fix a stop sign, have lunch at
the Diner, and if I was lucky I'd hear what they were tellin' about Myra
Kunce once and for all. Shoot I'd probably stop by Walker's drugs and ask
Ellie if she had anything for "feet falling asleep". If not, no big deal,
let the Morrison sisters talk..I'm in no hurry.
At the Pigeon Forge Mayberry show, Rodney closed the performances
with a solo called "I Wish Life was Like The Andy Griffith Show". That
refrain keeps going through my mind as I ponder how much fun it would be to
be Malcolm Tucker, the guest whom the folks in Mayberry taught to slow down,
take it easy, enjoy good company, good singin and a little peace. Yep
that's the plan go home, take a nap, spend some time with my girl and watch
a little TV. Life's to precious to hurry, That Malcolm, he's a lucky guy,
maybe I'll learn some day.
