Subject: How TAGS helps me
TAGS has helped me cope with being a single parent before my
daughter was even born. I feel like I can relate to the
show since Andy is a single parent to Opie. Hopefully, as I
raise my daughter watching TAGS it will help her to cope
with only having one parent. TAGS is definately a very
special show and will always be a part of me. Crystal, it's
definately not nutsy for a special show like TAGS to get you
through hard times.

Subject: TAGS accents
In the early shows Andy's accent sounded real strong, like his role in
No Time For Sergeants. As time went on it got softer. I don't think
Aunt Bee's character could have had the strength and affect it had if
they had her use a strong Southern accent. I believe they all realized
that they had a show that was not only funny but had good examples of
how we all should try to live our lives and treat other people. Well,
that's a penny of my two cents worth.
Congratulations, Paul, on the baby girl, I know she will soon have Daddy
wrapped around her little finger, that's what little girls are for.

Melynn, pretty name, for a girl. I mean not saying that Melynn would be a
name for a boy. She ain't from ancient Greece, is she?
Congrats Paul to you and Cindee on the new little one. I'll bet she can't
wait for her first ride in your squad car. Don't let her play with the
sireen on the way to the trout pond though, it makes Andy upset.
I guess with the little boys you already know what Floyd's transmission
sounded like, but she may remind you.
Lots of luck to you and yours.

Subject: petunias
Andy's response to Aunt Bee's suitor advising him on potting petunias was a
wonderful peek into the human side of the man. We all have wished we could
be as cool-headed and self-controlled as Andy seemed to be most of the time,
but this was an example that even he could be pushed too far. He was sick
and tired of this know-it-all interloper buttin' in and it was time to say
something about it. That was the turning point in the plot where things
began to turn Andy's way and the interloper was revealed for what he was.

About the accent in Mayberry.I felt the Mayor sounded like he was truly from
the South.I just met a couple this past weekend that were from South
Carolina. They didn't have an accent that was detectable. Could it be
possible that the people appearing in Mayberry had moved there from other
parts of the country? Maybe they came for a visit and never left.

Hey To All!
I've been away from my computer for a week or so, so please excuse any
digressions in time. I just had to say how much I enjoyed the 72hours and
that I got many episodes finally on tape without commercials.
To me when it was over, it felt like when one's house is full of company for
a holiday then the holiday is over thus making the people gone home. You
know how big and empty the house is right after that? Well that was the
feeling I was having. Yes, it's a sinking feeling.

Barney also has given BIG useful presents for occasions. In "Barney's First
Car", we hear him tell Andy about getting a septic tank for his parents on
their anniversary.
Rates right up there with getting a female canning jars for a gift on
birthdays, Christmas and gift giving holidays!

That reminds me of a memorable "Mayberry Escapism" episode of the Twilight
Zone. Remember the one where the harried man would doze on the train on his
way home from his stressful job, only to be awakened by the conductor
announcing: "Willoughby! Next stop, Willoughby." It was a wholesome little
town - probably like Mayberry was at the turn of the century, and was so
appealing to the man that one day he decided to get off there, where he was
warmly welcomed by the townsfolk.
I've often wanted to step off the fast moving train and into Mayberry myself.
On another subject, I am a TV animation writer who often sneaks Mayberry-isms
into my episodes. A series I wrote for, "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command,"
will have an amusing surprise for TAGS fans. It's called "Strange Invasion"
and I'll let you know when it airs in case you'd like to check it out.

Mayberry is one of those places you can go to and forget all of your
troubles,to Crystal who thinks she's a little nutsy because of the way she
feels about the show then all of us Andy fans are a little nutsy,(and there are
thousands of us out there).I also wish that the attitude of the people on the
show would spread all over the world, because then the world would be a better
place to live, and TAGS will live on and on forever in us and our

frank, i agree with you. the woman prisoner was one of the most beautiful
women to ever appear in mayberry! the episode was titled "prisoner of love"
and neal brower's, book mayberry 101, states that this episode aired in
conjunction with valentine's day. (1962 i think.) the actress's name was
susan oliver and unfortunately she died of cancer a while back. you can find
more info on her and many other stars on the "internet movie database" at
www.us.imdb.com. i think her character's name on the show was angela caroll
but i never heard them say this in the episode. i believe it is in the
original script according to "mayberry 101." tim hutcherson

Doug, where ya from in NC?
Being a native North Carolinian myself, I've thought about that 'un a
whole lot - both under and out from under the bucket. There's nothing
that grates on my nerves more than a fake southern accent on TV or in
movies. While, it's not always genuine, I think TAGS does as good a
job as you can find of not sounding too fake. Also, there are
different kinds of southern accents. For example, what you hear in
the mountains is way different than you'll hear in Charleston, SC.
Also, I was just reading an article of how the word "Appalachian" is
pronounced. For them what don't know, that middle a is short. If
you say it with a long a, people will know you're not from around
here, you're from somewheres else. The article also went on to say
that people from Appalachia don't even use the word very often.
That's also true. I grew up in Hickory, NC - not far from
Appalachian State University. References to that and, ocassionally
in school, to the Appalachian mountain range are the only times I can
think of using the word. I don't recall it ever being used in TAGS.
For what it's worth...

I'm not positive on this, but I believe that was "Doodles" Weaver of Spike Jones
fame. He had a modest hit in the 40's with his comic rendition of a horse race
called "Beetlebaum" (sp?). His niece is Sigourney Weaver. I don't believe he was
on any other TAGS episodes. Unfortunately Mr. Weaver had a bit of a drinking
problem and had less than a stellar career at the end of his life. I'm not a
Doodles Weaver expert but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night,....
that,...and...... I saw a biography on him on E's "Mysteries & Scandals"
