Subject: Mayberry Days, 2000
We just had to take a minute to say that we had a wonderful time at Mayberry
Days. Seeing all of the WBMUTBB members, celebrities, shows and events made
it the best ever. You just can't leave without feeling that your are taking
the the "Mayberry Spirit" with you.
We really enjoyed participating in the Silent Auction and it was really
successful. Also, as usual, David Browning, Allen Newsome and Phil Lee were
great.
Jim Clark is the best "Presiding Goober" a group could ask for. And, of
course, we enjoyed Neal Brower's presentation. Then this morning we heard
him on the "John Boy and Billy Show" from Charlotte, NC. He did his usual
outstanding job spreading the joy of Mayberry for the 40th Anniversary.
We haven't met a person yet who went to Maybery Days who didn't say they will
be back again and again. So will we and we hope to see even more of you next
year.
Also, we are looking forward to the Reunion in Birmingham and hope to see
many of you there. It looks like it wll be great. See you there.

that?

Allan, since you sent misspoovey a box of kleenex because Opie The Birdman
always made her cry...I thought I'd tell you that "Barney's New Car" always
made me feel broke. Are you going to make me feel better?

The "Man in a Hurry" is one of my favorites. It really sums up what small
towns were like in that era. In Tennessee people DID say Good Sabbath. Back
then, it was a totally different kind of day and it got reverent respect.
When all the grandchildren visited our grandparents, we weren't allowed to
yell too loud. "Mamaw" would come outside and whisper loudly,"Don't you know
it's the sabbath?" Great memories!

Okay, this is really weird, but I think I'm right. If you look at the hat that
Aunt Bee wears on the first episode "The New Housekeeper" when they're fishing,
I
think it is the same hat that one of the moonshine-making sisters wears on that
episode (the name escapes me at this time) where they sell shine on celebration
days and rat on the other makers of moonshine. Looks like the same hat to me!
Somebody look at your tapes and tell me what you think...Lisa

Anyone who has ever lost a pet certainly knows how emotional a time it
can be. I've been reading the digest the last few days, and seeing how
member after member has sympathized over one who lost a dog recently. It
put me in mind of a new movie, and I just thought I'd plug it. It's almost
too good a movie to have been made in color, and it's at the rental stores
now. It's called My Dog Skip, and while it doesn't have any TAGS stars in
it, it's full of values and laughs, just like our favorite sit-com. So if
you haven't watched it, give it a try. And, Miss Poovey, you might want to
have some of those Hollywood Hankeys close by, 'cause it will jerk the tears
right out of your eyes.
Happy watching!

I only recently discovered that Aneta Corsaut (Helen)
had passed away. Does anyone out there know when and
how. I was trying to count up how many people from
TAGS are still with us when I found out about Miss
Corsaut. I have never read much about her personal
life such as a biography, although I did get my
Mayberry Memories book at Mayberry Days this past
weekend and perhaps there is some information in there
concerning her. The book is fabulous, so be sure and
get your copy, you will not regret it because it is
worth every dime spent. Tell Aunt Bee Gomer says HEY!

Subject: Episodes with sub-stories
Mike wrote asking about episodes with sub-stories. Actually, IMHO, the
sub-stories in Opie's Charity aren't really sub-stories at all. They are
actually variations on the main theme. Frequently the writers would set up
what might look like sub-stories or sub-plots to emphasis the main theme.
Many times this technique is used to bring the main character around to the
resolution of a problem, or to see a blind spot they have yet to recognize.
It happens in the "The Horse Trader", "A Plaque for Mayberry", "Barney Fife,
Realtor", and I'm sure others. And the one you mentioned, "Andy The
Marriage Counselor", counts because the sub-stories both lead to the
episode's resolution.

Subject: Subplots
OK, Michael, here's a subplot for you (just wish I could remember the names
of the brothers).
Remember the episode where Aunt Bee is Otis' warden? Well, at the same
time, Barney is trying to rehabilitate the three brothers over at the
courthouse. Guess who had the best results? Give up? Well, I'm fixin' to
tell you.
Barney gives one of the three brothers a metal tool kit, one a leather kit,
and the other a Mr. Potato. This was in an effort to turn their twig in the
right direction. And who knows what good they could do once
their twigs get turned facing the way they should?
Aunt Bee did a real good job in turning Otis over in the right direction at
the Rock; however,
Barney didn't fare so well in his social experiment. (I know, you didn't see
this coming, did you?)
One guy used his metal kit to make a pass key and they all escaped.
I guess their twigs were just bound to stay turned in the wrong direction of
law breaking.
Laura Lee Hobbs, whose twig is permanently bent in the areas of dime store
clerking and gold truck watching.

>>Subject: big news from danville!
hey folks! here's some really big news from danville,va.: there is going to
be a Mayberry reunion show right here in our hometown of Danville!! I wanted
to wait til the line-up was complete before I let the cat out of the bag and
we just got the "official verification" right before "Mayberry days."<<
Tim...what a coincidence. This ranks right up there with Bernard..Mrs.
Lesch's dearly departed husband, and Bernard B-E-R-N-A-R-D Fife, the proud
owner of the lemon car.
Here in Indiana we have a Danville also. Now to look at a map Danville IN
just looks like any other town, BUT if you've ever been there (as Jim Nabors
and
other TAGS celebs have) you'll know that it is home to the Mayberry Cafe!.
I had the recent pleasure of taking my wife there along with another couple
who are big Andy fans also. What a treat! Fried Chicken (boneless..Can
Aunt Bee do that?) mashed taters and gravy, corn, fresh bread mmmm and of
course Pie!
The atmosphere was great also. Surrounded by Andy memorabilia, and dozens
of autographed photos, there are about 8 TV monitors playing our favorite show
in living Black and White. Our waitress called herself a Deputy, but to me
she
was Juanita. Thankfully she was a bit slow (probably from taking phone
calls) so we got to enjoy the fine surroundings a little longer.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, we stepped outside and
there across the street was a perfect squad care replica, a Ford Galaxy
with all the equipment...Well I just wouldn't have been surprised to see a
motorcycle with a sidecar pull up. It was that Mayberry.
I just had to bring this up because I am sooo jealous of everyone that went
to Mayberry days, and everyone that is going to Birmingham AL. (including
Floyd. yeah!) and of Miss Poovey for her special gift. I'm just had to gloat
a little
about my special treat, and Tim, you just gave me the inkling to mention it.

Sub-stories.......??????
That is a very good question Michael..............I never gave it a thought
before but now that you've brought it to my attention, I'd like to know the
answer too.
With all the "trained noticers" there are out there in Mayberry land I'm sure
we'll have the answer soon.

I believe "Leon" (a.k.a. Clint Howard) is in that movie and if that's
true...that makes one TAGS star in it.

Folks,
Check out the TAGSRWC web site. There's a link there for "Cast Birthdays" in
the left hand menu frame. That list also shows the date of passing of cast
members IF they have passed away.

Ok, you guys have forced me to pay closer attention to the subtle
things that happen in the background!
I was watching the episode on TV-Land the other evening where they
are trying to catch a thief in Wally's Filling Station. I noticed
a couple of things.
First, when Barney rigged the camera, he was hooking up the line so
that it would pull down on the shutter of the camera. However, when
he hooked it to the door, it would have only worked had the door
opened outward and pulled the string. It seems like the door to the
filling station opens in so that it would put slack on the string.
Second, why did only one picture show up on the film? It seems that
every time the door was opened the camera would have gone off. Surely
Barney wasn't the only person that came in the door that day?
Did anyone else notice this or is there something in my eye?
Maybe Helen should look, afterall, she's a teacher!

It was BIG!!!
It was a huge pleasure to re-new old friendships (and make a lot of new
friends)-- some of you I see only on Mayberry Days. I look forward to seeing
you all next year, if not before.
We appreciate YOU!!!!!
