I agree totally. I just got back from Mayberry (Mt. Airy) and the Mayberry
Motor Inn a couple of weeks ago. Our tour bus had a wonderful time there. The
people in that town were extremely polite. Everywhere we went. We also got to
tour Aunt Bea's room and it was a thrill for me. If you ever go there, it is
a must see. This trip was a dream of mine for years now.

RE:Ruby Red Star:
As a resident of Concord Massachusetts, I feel I can answer your question
about the shot heard round the world.
on April 19th 1775 the British Army left Boston, and headed for Concord,
where they were told the farmers had a store of ammunitions.
The Local Farmers also were the local militia, and were called minute men.
They had to be ready to fight in a minutes notice.
Well, the British came into town, and the farmers gathered across the North
Bridge, and that's where the shot was fired that was heard round the world.
It is actually a poem that was etched on to a window by the Rev. Emerson as
he watched the fight, and it went like this.

"By the Rude Bridge which arched the flood, here once the embattled farmers
stood, and fired the shot heard around the world."

It meant that finally someone had stood up to the British Commonwealth, and
it was BIG NEWS.

In reference to the "shot heard round the world" from the Mayberry Minutemen
episode, I was always taught that this referred to the beginning of the War
for Independence, (better known as the American Revolution although it wasn't
really a revolution). I believe it's from a Longfellow poem about the doings
at Lexington and Concord, but of course alludes to the fact that what
happened when the United States of America formed would impact the rest of
the world from then on -- a "gunshot" for freedom loving people everywhere!

Hey
I was wondering if any of you could tell me of any episode that shows the way
up to the mayor's office? My understanding is that the office was located
above the jail, as per the Loaded Goat episode, where the Mayor said
something like this in responding to the possibility of the goat blowing up:
"my office is up there". I don't remember ever seeing a door to the
upstairs, do any of you?

What's your hurry?

Hey To All,
France's Etui?? Sighhhh! That is as good as her hankie if not a bit better!
What was the fragrance that she used in her Etui? Was a pleasant
Grandmotherly foo-foo fragrance???

Oh Aunt Bee, your shadow box sounds lovely! You have every right to be proud
of it! Gee, I would settle for her jars of pickles (or her bedjack :o)! ).

Is Greg a member of our little community?

Gonna go sit with the pickle stash.

Well, there was these folks, and they was gonna test this new
rocketship-thingy they'd just built, but they figured it was too dangerous
to put people in it for the first flight, and how else was they gonna get
test the rocket, so what they done was they put a whole bunch of sheep in
there and blasted it off, and sure enough it successfully orbited the Earth
so they called it "The Herd Shot 'Round the World."

I'm surprised at you for not knowin' that. And I'm even MORE surprised at
you thinkin' I didn't know that!

>>>...This is from the book "Inside Mayberry" by Dan Harrison and Bill
Habeeb.

There is a photo in the book of a young Frances Bavier in her days as a
'Broadway ingenue'. This portrait appeared in the Griffith show/Taylor
House several times.
>>>

For those who don't have that book (I believe it's been out of print for
some time), you can find the same photo on page 174 (upper left) of the new
"Mayberry Memories" book -- and if you folks don't have this book yet, you
ought to be ashamed of yourselves, because it's a "must have" tome for any
Mayberry fan.

Anyway Joe, thanks for the tip; every time someone's over at my house and
one of those episodes comes on, they're always surprised when I point the
photo out to them.

When TAGS came to TV Land, I thought it would be a wonderful thing. I
was hoping that all of the episodes would be shown in order from 1-249.
Well, just like their predecessors, it never happened. They too show a
lack of regard for the color episodes. It's nice to have the epilogues,
but it would be better to see all of the episodes instead of Opie The
Birdman (a great episode) for the fourth time.
Since this is not directed at anyone here, I hope it's not a violation
of rule #2, but it's a shame that all of these so called superstations
do not give the latter episodes the showings that they deserve.
On a better note, TV Land's picture quality is as good as you'll find
out there. They get good source material for the show.
And lastly, has anyone purchased TAGS on DVD yet? If so, could you give
us a report on them?

Subject: Andy, Barney, & The War

Besides the conflict about when they graduated high school (1945 vs
1948), there's this discussion about Andy and Barney's war service.
Regardless of when they graduated High School, they'd have been too
young to have served in Europe during "the War" (WWII) as VE day was May
1945 and VJ day was Sep 2, 1945. This discussion comes up every couple
of years. In either case, they'd have been too young to serve in Europe
during the war. I think both the HS grad year and war service problems
and simply cases of TV writers not paying attention to the details of
their scripts, nothing more nor less. I don't buy the arguments about
"maybe Ange was in France during the Korean War" (1950-1953) -- I can't
imagine a real serviceman saying that, "maybe they left HS and finished
in 1948", "maybe he got there REAL fast after graduating", nor anything
else. In one script Ange supposedley learned French during the war and
Barn killed Germans, but these don't match with their alleged grad
dates. It just isn't possible. Now, if they'd graduated in 1945,
joined the service right away, they may have seen a little combat at the
tail end of the war IF they served in the Pacific. This happened with
one of my mom's uncles. But, never is their a claim either man served
in the Pacific. If you take the 1945 grad date, Ange could've served in
the occupation forces, but Barn could not have killed Germans.
Furthermore, in such a case, Ange wouldn't have said he learned French
DURING the war -- unless he's an out and out liar and would know that is
not true of Ange. There are those cowards who falsely claim wartime
service, but Ange would never do that. Both of these TAGS
contradictions are simply cases of TV writers not paying attention to
details.

Thanks for the kind words "Aunt Bee" from Orlando! I remember the event in
Anniston, Alabama very well. That was one of the best shows I'd been to in a
long time. The town of Anniston was very charming and much like our Mayberry
Days festivities in Mount Airy. I still have many great personal items from
the estate sale when Ms. Bavier passed away and treasure the memories of my
visit to her home before attending the auction. Thanks again,

Greg Kelley

Hi everyone. I just heard on the local news that the Snappy Lunch in Mt.
Airy is up for sale. Price is 160 Thousand. If no one buys it they said it
was going on eBay. I sure hope whoever gets it, keeps it the same and
doesn't change a lot about it. I enjoyed eating there during Mayberry Days.
Just thought I would pass along the info. Kevin

>From The Winston-Salem Journal, Winston-Salem, NC:

"An online auction could change where the pork-chop sandwich -- the chili and
coleslaw-smothered ambrosia of ''Mayberry'' -- is served in a town that
attracts hundreds of tourists looking to fill up on nostalgia and fried food.

The Snappy Lunch building, home of Mount Airy's oldest restaurant, is for
sale. Snappy Lunch has been in the building since 1923 and may have to move
if its proprietor and the owner of the building can't agree on a purchase
price. "
