Hey To All,
I have pondered this when I watch this episode and I have been watching and
reading the postings on this thus far.

I was thinking that it would be too earsplitting to crash them so close to
the eardrum and maybe the cymbal crash was recorded on a soundtrack with
Don/Barney only "looking" like he crashed the cymbals in Andy's ear as they
taped the episode. Then they could have synchronized the soundtrack to Don's
movement and Andy's reaction. It was very well done if this would be the
case!

I was taught that the end of WWII was October 1945. The Emancipation
Proclamation was the document Lincoln signed to free the slaves. But what was
the shot heard around the world?

<< Concerning the graduation date of 1948. After WWII many vets went back to
school to finish their education. It could be that Andy and Barney did that.
That would solve the problem of them serving in the service and graduating
at
 the same time.
Did you ever think about that? >>

That's a good point, but I believe that would've been obviously mentioned in
the first class reunion episode (or both for that matter). The implication
was that Andy and Barney were in school together without interruption.

I think the reference the other poster made was to the forces who stayed
behind until 1947, suggesting Andy may have been in that group. Of course,
Andy mentioned being there "during the war", and since V-E Day was May 8,
1945, there would have to be an early graduation and an awfully quick boot
camp for that to happen, if Andy did indeed graduate in 1945...

For the record, I am 36 and always figured Andy and Barney were that age or
maybe slightly younger. They act like guys would at that age, especially
that all-time classic scene in which Barney is caught saying
"Cock-a-doodle-doo-oo!" to Juanita. Hilarious!

Lewis Grizzard, the late great American and one outstanding Southerner, once
proclaimed that:

When a man turns 40, it's time to stop messing around with women who don't
know how WWII turned out. I guess he should have added "and those who don't
know when it ended!"

Gooolleeeee, I didn't think I was starting a moulage with a simple typo;
I hereby apologize. However, according to my World Book Encyclopedia
(and they're goooood books), WWII ended in Europe in May, 1945 but
continued in the Eastern Theater of Operation till September. High School
graduations are typically in May or June so Anj could've been sent to
France right after boot camp. Even my mother, who served in the Marine
Corps for the war only, along with all the other extra women recruited
for the war effort, was not discharged until 1946. And there are always
forces remaining in a war zone for some time to come who qualify for
campaign medals, so I can still see some feasibility in my original
theory. But of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I
would defend your right to express it always. Meanwhile, Larry Inman has
a real interesting theory; thanks Larry!

When we attended that Mayberry event in Anniston, Alabama several years
ago there was a gentleman by the name of Greg Kelley, whose business card
said he specialized in Mayberry collectibles. He was a very nice man and
I trusted him. He said he had attended the auction at Frances Bavier's
estate. I bought her etui from him and he included a W-4 form of hers
from CBS. He had many items and a big box of papers once belonging to
her. The whole shebang is in a shadow box with my other collectibles and
I am very proud of it. I think you hafta' go on faith sometimes. I also
got one of those orange-checked cans of beans with Andy's photo on it
from way back when from Greg.

Subject: Cymbal clanging

Back in 1974, I was the lone cymbal player in our high school marching band
(and the first female one) I rarely took my cymbals home to practice (it's
easy to pick up the cues for "Star Spangled Banner" after 2 or 3 tries) but
one weekend I must have. Come Monday morning, I dragged them to school with
me and on my way to the band room, decided to sneak up behind one of my
friends and wake her up! Her reaction must have been close to Andy's, because
she jumped a foot!
I might add that I was given a stern reprimand by one of the senior English
teachers, the beast of the second floor.
You've got to give Andy a lot of credit for his acting ability -- I wonder
how many times they practiced it? Or maybe they rehearsed it without the
actual clash until filming, so he really was surprised.

Wishing we were back in a time when we grew up hating our teachers (not
really),

Subject: Frances/Aunt Bee's stuff

As reported here earlier, if you stay at the Mayberry Motor Inn, you can
see all sorts of Aunt Bee's stuff. The room next to the office has been
made into a shrine full of stuff the owners bought at Frances' estate
sale. They put a super large picture window so you can look in. When we
were there in August of '98, the owner was kind enough to let us
actually go in and she gave us the 25 cent tour. They had bought all
sorts of things...furniture, bedclothes, knick-knacks, doilies, signed
receipts, and clothes. Sandi, girl let me tell ya, I was THRILLED to
hold one of Aunt Bee's dresses up against myself! It was a 2 piece dress
and jacket outfit, much like Aunt Bee wore on the show. A dark navy
outfit with brocade trim on the jacket. And there was still some scent
on it. Any of you ladies out there remember Hawaiian White Ginger
cologne? Kinda smelled like that. And just to plug the motor inn, we had
a wonderful stay there. The rooms were NOT like your average hotel room.
Our room had rich dark wood furniture; the bed had a beautiful head and
footboard and the whole room was just homey and comfy, just like the
guest room at the Taylor's house. (when it hasn't magically
dissappeared) The Mayberry Motor Inn also has nice replicas of the squad
car and Emmett's Fixit Shop truck. Hope ya'll get a chance to visit
there at least once!

With all the talk about Aunt Bee lately, I thought I'd share an interesting
tidbit for those who may not have read this. This is from the book "Inside
Mayberry" by Dan Harrison and Bill Habeeb.

There is a photo in the book of a young Frances Bavier in her days as a
'Broadway ingenue'. This portrait appeared in the Griffith show/Taylor
House several times.
"One of the things Aaron Rueben used to do" recalled Don Knotts, "was to
move pictures around. No one knew why, but he was always shifting and
changing pictures. I guess he must have had one of those picture-hanging
compulsions"
The photo first appears in Episode #1, "the New Housekeeper" just after Aunt
Bee arrives she and Andy pass the photo as they cross in toward the
kitchen.. In the final scene of Episode #8 "A Feud is a Feud" the photo can
be seen in the same spot. Later that season in Episode #18 ...the portrait
shows up on the back wall over the side table. In Episode #23, Andy and
Opie Housekeepers" Bee stands just to the left of the photo as she is
preparing to leave for the bus. In the next season, in Episode #38 the
photo is hanging over Henry Wheeler's (Handyman?) right shoulder of the wall
next to the front door.

This is a rare photo of the young Frances, but some of you collectors may
have a copy.

Hey! Just wanted to drop a note and tell everyone how much I enjoy getting
the digest. For quite sometime, I was under the impression that you could
only be a member of the online chapter if there wasn't one near you. Well,
while attending my first ever Mayberry Days Festival, I found out different.
As soon as I got home, logged on, and said, "Sarah, get me

to be a member, and I enjoy hearing from y'all. Truth is Mayor, Mayberry
