Subject: a Grinch observation
Hi all,
I saw "The Grinch" last night and even though I liked it, it wasn't quite
what I expected. A character study? A love interest? The Grinch as a
confused man-child with trust issues? Some jarring notes indeed. Still, I
can't help but think Ron Howard drew from his Mayberry experiences in
establishing the small town feel of Whoville.
Which brings me to my questions...anyone ever find any "Mayberry" touches in
any of Ron Howard's films? So far I've noticed Gomer's name being invoked in
"Splash" and a video store closeup showing two Don Knotts movies in "EdTV",
and the more overt influence in "The Grinch." Anyone else have any others?

I promise not to spoil the movie for those who have not seen it, but I was
happy to see that Clint Howard had a bigger role than I expected. Yeah, there
were a couple of gags they could have left, but overall I thought it was well
worth the price of admission.
Regarding the question about the original Hollywood Squares, I remember that
show well. My favorite by far was Wally Cox!

Well I can't give too much away, as I have not seen it yet....
I do realize that it was Ron not Opie that directed the film. But I
certainly, definitely, 100% expected more from Ron, as he did grow up on a
classic FAMILY show, where the comedy was real and not fake. I realize as
director and not writer he only had so much control, but he could have done
a lot more to make it better. On TAGS, you laughed because it was funny and
REAL-LIFE, not because it is bathroom humor and you laugh because every kid
under 8 in the theater does. True comedy lasts, everything else fades, trust
me. Just look at how long TAGS and I Love Lucy lasted. (and continue to...)

After reading some other reviews on here, I must lighten up a little on my
bashing of the film.... I apologize to all if I offended anybody.
I only do it because I respect Ron Howard so much and I have very high
standards for him. I wish he had cut out all jokes that Dr. Suess hadn't or
wouldn't have put in.
I will not say another word about the film until I see it or I can't keep my
mouth shut any longer, whatever comes first! (I'm somewhat of a
butt-in-ski!)

I appreciate so much your kind words about my rhyme (I have never called
what I write poems, because I never thought they where that good. I just
make lines that rhyme). I have written a few. Most are emotional ones
for/about my beloved wife (that I recite to her while beating a gas can),
but the rest are humorous ones. Occasionally I come up with one that has a
little more meaning, to me anyway. It has always been a way I can express
what I am thinking. And, it certainly makes me feel good to know that others
can get a little meaning out of it as well. Janet, I am humbled that you
would share it with others. Yes, it is fine for you to do so. I am not
usually bold enough to share them with others (especially this many!). But
since at least 3 of you liked it, maybe one of these days I will share some
of my TAGS poems. Anyway, thank you so much for the kind words. Time to get
back on the truck.
