I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth on this topic. The thing that
always puts a lump in my throat is when Opie tells Andy that he wants to buy
his girlfriend a new coat in "Opie's Charity" and also I don't remember the
episode but when Andy tells Aunt Bee that they are a family and what is right
for her has to be right for him and Opie. This is the episode where Aunt
Bee is talking about marrying this guy, because she thinks she is keeping
Andy from getting married again. Also watching ol' Ben sing along with the
rest of the guys in the Christmas episode gets me every time.
Hope everyone has a Mayberry filled Christmas.

<< As for the lumps in the throat, the releasing of the bird scene tears me
up
from start to finish. Many of the Opie and Andy scenes do the same, how
about
when Opie is going to face the bully that has been taking his milk money.
Andy is getting ready to go to the office and Opie asks him to take a change
of clothes for him just in case he needs them later, Andy picks up Opie and
gives him a great big hug,............now, that is making me misty just
thinking about it >>
Oh yes...I cry every time I see the baby bird episode. And the same goes for
the bully episode. "Pa...are you sure you didn't feel it?" Even my SO gets
choked up so it's not just a "woman thing". I think anyone who has children
can relate to the warm relationship Andy and Opie had and the heartaches of
being a parent.

The episode of Barney hanging in the closet is funny, but it's also funny
when Barney yells at the boys and asks them,"What's the matter? Haven't you
ever seen a man hanging in the closet before?"
ha ha ha - He buttered her up and she egged him on!!

Subject: Barney's best prop
There were many props that were used in just a single episode (like the
motorsickle), but a favorite of mine that is used in quite a few episodes is
his hat. When he was trying to track the robber who threw out the suitcase of
money, he took the knockout drops and when Ang pulled him down in bed, the
hat stayed on. And when he got drunk when the Governor was coming and he wore
it with his uniform. Or, and this is my favorite, when Barney was waiting for
his new car to be delivered, he was in his shirt sleeves on the porch with
Andy and was wearing the hat and telling him that he bought a septic tank for
his parents anniversary. It's still a HOOT!!!!

Subject: episodes that get to us
Hello all! Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season.
In regard to the episodes that pull at our heartstrings, I haven't seen one
of my favorites mentioned. If it has been, please excuse my redundance.
Remember the one where Opie is trying to break up Miss Peggy and Andy? When
Andy first learns that Opie has been the one causing the problems between
them, he is angry and tells Opie, "Boy you got yourself a peck of trouble
unless you got some mighty good reasons" (or something close to that). Then
when Opie says he did what he did because he was scared of losing his pa,
Andy sets Opie on his lap and tells him just how much he means to him and how
nothing will ever come between them. My favorite line is when Andy says that
Opie is his son and it is hard for him to tell Opie just how much he means to
him 'cause he's a part of him. If that one don't get to you, then....I
just.....don't know anything!!!

Hello everyone,
I am an elementary school principal and I often quote Barney when he
saids," When you are dealing with people, you need to go more from the heart
and not so much from the book." I use this when I am dealing with the
little people in my school.
Happy Holidays to all,

Subject: New Darlings and Jim Nabbors
Hey everybody. I watched the episode today about the baby cring every time
aunt Bee held her. I heard Andy say he had to break up a fight between the
Darlings, but the names he gave( Carl and Jed ) who were having a fight
because one told the other there was no Santa Cluas, could not have been the
same old Darlings( you know Brisco, Charlene, and the boys). Was there
another set of Darlings? It's the first time I've every heard about these
Darlings. Did anybody else catch that? Also, has anybody heard the
commercial on TVLand for Jim Nabbors cd (When he spoke). It sounds like the
tape is dragging. I wonder if this is an old commercial or just pour
quality? "See ya later, Ange"

At a boy Chuck,
I haven't noticed the missing badge in that episode,
but I did notice it missing in the "Dogs Dogs Dogs" episode,
when Barney loads the dogs up to take them out to the field,
his badge is missing when he returns. I reckon the props dept. fell down on
the job.
Sandi, on the birdcage, with the pan that is the bottom removed, a clever
prop man
could possibly insert a nest (with some assistance mind you) then slide
pan/bottom
back on. Oncest upon a time I had similar cage and had to put sticks in for
perches
that were larger than the door and that's how I did it.
And one other thang, Barney got tipsy from the Morrison sisters marmalade

A while back someone mentioned pickle-hunger after watching the episode
featuring Aunt Bee's pickles. I can honestly say, I've never had that urge,
because I'm not a pickle fan BUT I have to confess, after watching Dogs
Dogs Dogs, I definitely got a hankerin' for a Mr. Cookie Bar. So I rummage
myself a chocolate chip granola bar, or some cookie resembling a Mr. Cookie
bar.
Thanks Paul for your nice words on my Basketball in Mayberry story. Now I
know at least two people have read it, cause my mother is on this mailing
list too. Now about your mother...well, folks will just have to read the
story to see how she saved you. Digest readers will remember a few weeks
back Paul had a dialogue with Harvey Bullock going, and Harvey told us how
he and another writer used to stick each other's name in a script as some
no-good desperado or something. Paul mentioned he wanted to be in a script,
so he AND Harvey are in this one, as well as some other famous names, you'll
recognize. check it out.

The Mayberry Deputy has been pretty quiet lately. I wonder if the esteemed
David Browning is busy playing Scrooge this holiday season. You may not
know that this is another one of David's acting accomplishments. I wonder
if he ever gets mixed up on stage though...
Mr. Scrooge won't you give 35 pence to the poor? (Scrooge) Wellll, I know
how that works! You give em 35 pence, they take 40, you give em' 40 pence,
they'll take 45. give 'em 45, they take 50. I say just Nip it nip it nip it
in the bud!
I'm really glad to hear that that was really Keevy Hazelton's voice, and he
is not a regular Keevey Vaneevy.

10 ways to tell it's Christmas in Mayberry:
1. Sam Muggins is makin' a little moon just to merry up Christmas.
2. All the benches on Main Street end up in front of Ben Weaver's store.
3. Everybody dresses up like it is cold.
4. There is a Christmas tree in the court house.
5. Ellie spills egg nog in Ben Weaver's plate. (Watch the last scene
closely.)
6. Ben Weaver starts hanging around the alley at the side of the court
house.
7. Barney begins to practice being a tenor Santa Claus.
8. The entire Taylor family is deputized.
9. Ben Weaver packs up all the merchandise he hasn't been able to sell and
hauls it over to the court house.
10. Everybody practices "Away In a Manger" - even old Ben.
Feel free to add to the list.

They probably called on Goober. If he can get a car in the courthouse,
surely he could figure a way to get a bird's nest into a cage.
I always figured Opie just built a makeshift nest inside the cage to replace
the original one, which he probably just left in the tree (that's just a
theory).

Well I just can't hold back anymore. One of the most touching scenes for me
is The Cave Rescue. Andy and Helen sneak back into the cave to let Barney
rescue them. At the end Thelma Lou looks at her man Barney and says to Helen
something along the lines of "He really is something". Helen, knowing that
Andy has helped Barney to save face in front of the townspeople replies "They
both are." That one causes me to puddle up everytime. It is an example of
Andy being the big brother - protector of ole Barn.
AND TAKE THAT GUN OUTTA YOUR MOUTH.

We had our annual chapter party this past Saturday and I almost forgot to
post about it! It was small this year but still lots of fun. We played
Mayberry Scattegories and relived old memories; watched the Christmas
episode; exchanged gifts and enjoyed lots of good food.
Anytime more than one Mayberry fan gets together it's a swell time!!
Merry Mayberry Christmas to everyone!! Aunt Bee of Orlando

I am glad to see some of the color episodes playing on tvland now, and I saw
one of those mysterious appearances/disappearance type things today. I was
watching the
episode when Aunt Bee lost her pin and then found it again (after receiving the
insurance money). When she found it and showed Andy, Warren and Goober, Andy
pinned it
on her dress and prepared to call the insurance man (who was later Howard
Sprague!). Goober and Warren followed Aunt Bee in the kitchen and suddenly the
pin was
laying on the kitchen table to be picked up by Goober and Warren, and
tragically ground up in the trash disposal. She must've taken that pin off on
her way into the
kitchen, huh?
