Rance played the farmer who took Newman in after Kramer kicked him out of the mail truck. Clint Howard also appeared on Seinfeld, as The Smog Strangler. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 14:13:43 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Touching moment With the discussion of touching moments in the series, I caught one last night that really hit home. It's the episode where Opie is afraid to dance, and in the scene where Andy is trying to "persuade" him to go, Opie says that he doesn't like to dance. Andy says, "How do you know until you've tried?" Then Opie stares at his father with such a helpless expression, and tells him, "I tried it once... I just don't know how." I'm paraphrasing most of this, but the sentiment is there. At least it is for me, because I have a ten year old boy facing the same kind of confidence issues as Opie was. And it's not easy being a parent shepherding our younguns into these types of situations where they might actually fall on their face. Not only does that phrase come out, but others come out even when I am preaching (I am a pastor) and the Andy fans in the congregation (and there are many) sit there and laugh.... As for the lumps in the throat, the releasing of the bird scene tears me up from start to finish. Many of the Opie and Andy scenes do the same, how about when Opie is going to face the bully that has been taking his milk money. Andy is getting ready to go to the office and Opie asks him to take a change of clothes for him just in case he needs them later, Andy picks up Opie and gives him a great big hug,............now, that is making me misty just thinking about it............or the episode when Opie is going to run away from home and Andy tells him if he runs away it will be for ever, Opie tears up the note that Andy is helping to write and climbs up into Andy's lap............or how about when Aunt Bee thinks she is getting in the way of Andy and Helen and Clara encourages her to date, Aunt Bee ends up making a story about the Butter and Egg man........at the end of the episode, Andy tells Aunt Bee that even if he and Helen get married that she will still have a place in there home, Aunt Bee cries and give Andy a hug.......not if that want clutch you, I don't know what will. As I get older, the Andy and Opie stories seem to get to me more and more.......... one more, how about when Barney sees Thelma Lou at the high school reunion (color episode) Whew! that is enough for today. The zoom in on the apple with the >long peel, that the sleeping visitor is holding in the epilogue of "Man in a >Hurry." Man, that gets me every time. I also think, when I see scenes like that, no wonder Ron Howard turned out to be such an outstanding director. He learned from the best. Look at the direction on TAGS; it's awesome! Zooming in on that apple peel tied the end of that show up like a package with a big red bow on top, and little things like that can really make all the difference in the feeling of a show. The package would be nice without the bow, but not perfect. The bow makes it perfect. I miss the days when "close enough" was not good enough. Martha "For the love of Mike, do it! One of the biggest recurring roles is that of the Lab guy played by Olan Soule, better known as Mayberry's own Chiormaster and Mayberry Hotel desk clerk John Masters. The finality of that, just like thinking of a creature becoming extinct, just rips me! That Mayberry Reunion show on TLC this weekend was a repeat from 1993 and it was originally only an hour too, for I have it on tape. It's the ep featuring the celebrity criminal "Gentleman Dan Caldwell". He is booked into the Mayberry Jail for a few days and Barn, Aunt Bee and Opie are all taken in with his charms and yarns. However the gig is up when Caldwell steals Barney's gun and tries to escape. Anyway.. in the first few minutes of the show Barney is preparing for Caldwell's arrival and decides to get "the bullet" out of his pocket and "load up." Notice when Barney is standing in the doorway to the back room...his badge is not on his shirt,..Then magically it's there when he comes out.. It also disappears and reappears at least two more times in the episode. I am sure the scenes were probably shot on different days and then put together,..and someone missed the missing badge. Hey To All! About a week or so I got my next installment of the Columbia House TAGS, the one about "Opie". One of the snowy evenings, I got comfy and popped the tape in my VCR. One of the episodes on the tape is "Opie The Birdman" and I got to pondering, thinking and trying to just flat out figure it out. How did they get that big bird's nest inside that little cage door opening in the Taylor's old used bird cage? The nest didn't look tatter or smooshed in any way. The birdcages back then had a tray that slid out to change the graveled paper but was the total bottom of the cage. Those kind of cages didn't come apart or have trap doors. So how did they do it? Besides the pondering, I had to get my Posh Puffs out. As many times as I have seen that episode, it dawned on me this time when Andy opened the window and told Opie to sit there and listen to the birds chirp for their momma. The thought struck me that Opie could empathize with the birdlets chirping for their momma! Opie was blessed to still have his Daddy, Andy, but I am sure he missed his ma just as much as those birds did and it would be mighty hard to sit there and listen to their chirps/cries. Talk about getting a lump in the throat! Well doing my Christmas Pickle inventory, any need pickles for Christmas dinner? Merry Christmas To My Friends In Mayberry!
