I think you just broke a rule, but, in defense of one not here to defend
herself, there is, of course, a huge difference in being meddlesome and
caring. In fact, a great number of times she did not say or do anything for
fear of interfering. She was, in fact, one of the sweetest, kindest, most
loving characters in the history of television. She is the very essence of
what, deep down, what we hope we all could be ... one who cares more about
others than herself. You need look no further than the very first episode to
see this. Though she loved Mayberry, Andy and Opie, she was willing to leave
it all just to make Opie happy. The Golden Rule exemplified. So in answer to
your question ... yes.

Yes, glad to see someone mentioning this oval window. I have seen it in
several
episodes and have found it fascinating. Perhaps the window is unique
enough to be noticed when reused. I think it must have been a favorite
piece of the set
designer. Anyone know how many and which episodes display this window?

In Howard's first episode (The County Clerk) Andy reveals that he went
through high school with Howard. You are correct that WE never see him
until the color episodes, but Andy has obviously known him for years.

Dave, I guess you forgot to put that bucket of Gomers on your head when
you broke rule number 2 , but I think that you really don't understand
Aunt Bee. She was a sensitive caring person who loved both Andy & Opie
a great deal & tried to provide for them a warm & nourishing home. I
think that she had a close relationship with Andy as he was growing up,
& was happy to have the opportunity t do something useful with her life
which perhaps is a concept not clearly understood by the young, but
certainly well understood by those of us who are senior citizens in
Mayberry. She certainly is well beloved by a lot of us & why several of
us chose her as our Mayberry nickname.

With all the great lines in the show, most are just well-written pieces of
fun worthy of quoting, but every sometimes you come across one you can agree
with. And I gotta agree with Otis ' "Every now and then I like to see a
bat!"

Actually, the waitress whom I aspire to was named Olive. (No offense to
Juanita, but she always struck me as a kind of "loose" lady. After all,
even Andy admits that "she's everybody's Juanita!") Paul Mulik tells me
that Olive (played by Alice Backes) appears in the episode about Ernest
T Bass joining the army. Andy and Barney had lunch at the diner and each
left a quarter tip(!) Barney discusses going back to retrieve one of the
quarters, but then decides against it, since, as Andy points out, "poor
old Olive is a widow with four children."

I'm a single mom with one daughter, which isn't the same as being a
widow with 4 children, but I can relate to and admire the spunk of a
waitress raising 4 kids. I've always wanted to own my own diner, so I
think that if I moved to Mayberry, I'd try to get a job waitressing at
the Snappy Lunch, keep my eyes open, learn a lot, and eventually buy the
place. After all, Goober bought the Wally's Gas Station.

Ah, Mayberry ... Land of my dreams ...

It's not often I laugh heartily out loud while reading the Digest but
Doug's post today about getting excited over a new suit from Mt. Pilot
and hanging out his shingle and all just got to me! He is a scream!!
Between him and LauraLee, we have quite a comical site here and I truly
enjoy it!!! I just wish I could be funny too; oh well, my hubby thinks
I'm funny, especially when I make kerosene pickles or turpentine
marmalade. Aunt Bee of Orlando

I just wanted to remind all of you that the WBMUTBB Digest is now
archived!! If you miss an issue of the Digest or just want to go back
and review, just head over to the archives and check 'em out. You can
even do searches, list posts by "Author", and a few other settings.
There's also a private message board over there for our members but I
don't really encourage it (use Miss Crump's Blackboard on the TAGSRWC
if you get a chance).

To access the Archives you need the username and password,
Goto:

Username: floyd
Password: lawson

Yeah, not too hard to guess the username and password but hopefully
it'll keep out most snoopers.

Speaking of Miss Crump's above, there are several folks that are
really enjoying themselves over at Miss Crump's Blackboad on the
TAGSRWC web site. Y'all drop by and be neighborly if'n you have time.
It's fun just to visit even if you don't do any talking. It's a lot
slower paced than a visit to Sarah's Chatroom so if you'd like to
converse with folks but the chatroom is hard for you because you can't
type too fast.....Miss Crump's is for you.

I've seen all the jobs that everyone would like to have and I think they're
all great, it would be so nice if our life today could be like Mayberry.
Even though I don't work now, but if I could have a job in Mayberry, I
would want to work at the Blue Bird diner with Juanita, that way I could
get all the scoop on all the men of Mayberry. I think Juanita had a good
job, Barney seemed to like her a lot. So I would want to be Juanita's
friend and co-worker.

My favorite thing to watch on TV is certainly the B&W TAGS episodes.
The second best thing to watch? hmmmmm, the color episodes. They
give you the feeling (and knowledge) that Mayberry is still around!
Kinda like chatting with an old friend and catching up with things,
while still appreciating the "good ol' days."

Concerning Howard, Andy did know him in high school (he and Opie
discussed that in the episode where Howard joins the lodge.

Subject: Barney & his sickle

I wrote in the other day and said that I'd like the job of being a
motorsickle cop in Mayberry. That just reminded me of the episode
so I plugged in the tape and watched it. Although I've seen that
episode probably 20-30 times I finally realized that that is not
Barney riding the sickle. The only time he's really riding it is
when he's chalking the tires - otherwise it's a double.

The reason I mention this is to point out WHY I never noticed it
before. The three other times they show him riding the sickle the
attention is diverted away from the person riding it. The first
is when Andy is sitting in the sidecar - in this scene I've always
watched what Andy was doing, not who was actually on the sickle.
The second is at check-point-chickie - I always watch the truck
because it looks like it's going to run over him. The third is
when Aunt Bee is crossing the street - I always watch her because
she's walking right out in front of him.

I was a little disappointed when I first realized it wasn't him
riding it and I started to not write in about it, but it was just
so ingenious the way they made it look like it was really Barney.

Subject: Mayberry Sheriff's Badge

Hey to everyone,

I've been searching for an authentic reproduction of Andy's or Barney's
Badge, as well as a Blue/Gold Mayberry Sheriff Shoulder Patch. Weaver's
offers both of these items, however, while nice, the badge is not a true
reproduction & the should patch is Brown/Gold. Would also love to get a
reproduction of Barney's Cap Badge.

If anyone has any of these items they'd like to sell, please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Maybe Allen can start a "Trading Post" for Mayberry memorabilia.....Just a
thought-

Happy New Year to All!!!!!
