Not so, Andy talked about going to school with Howard. He would have
known him, or of him for a long time.

Well, I've waited several days now to see if anyone would post an answer to
Bob Bravetti's question:
"In what movie will you find Mayberry residents (and gypsy):

Don Knotts
George Lindsay
Dub Taylor
Jim Nabors and
Jamie Farr"

I admit I had to look this one up, but I have seen this movie...just many,
many years ago! You will find them all in the movie "Cannonball Run II".
Thanks for the great question, Bob!

Dear fellow Mayberrians:
Could you please tell me which of the cast members of
TAGS have died and what was the cause of death. I
always wonder when I watch the reruns how many are
still with us and how many are deceased. I's
appreciate the info. Thanks again for this wonderful
site and the many meanderings of you fellow
Mayberrians.

The tears on my pillow do bespeak the pain that's in
my heart.

I love Aunt Bee and would love to have a relative like
her in my life!

        Hello to all you Mayberrians/Mayberryites:

This is my first time posting to this site since joining
several months ago or thereabouts.
While reading the digest from day to day I am quite
impressed with the members
knowledge of Mayberry trivia. I happen to catch an episode
this afternoon and there was
a reference made of a "Tracy Ruppert". I will not mention
the episode or who happen to
mention Tracy, I want to see just how good you all are on
trivia.
I will be anxiously awaiting to hear all the correct answers
com-a-flying.

Subject: Howard Sprague

Greetings Mayberry
Someone wrote in yesterday to say they didn't like
color episodes and one reason was a discrepancy re
something Howard said about Andy dating Alice Harper
10 years ago and that Andy didn't know Howard 10 years
ago and only met him during the color episodes.
Welll....actually, Andy told Helen that he and Howard
went to High School together (this was in the episode
when Helen makes Andy set him up with a date with the
new county nurse). Even though Howard didn't appear
until the color episodes, I believe he was still
supposed to have been a citizen of Mayberry for most
if not all of his life. He just wasn't brought in
unitl later when Don Knotts had left, etc. Also, he
probably didn't have much of a chance to do anything
due to being tied to his mother's apron strings, etc
since boyhood. Andy said that Howard never did much
after school like the other kids - "just went straight
home". Helen said she wondered why and Andy
said..."His Mother"!

Watch those color episodes and you will learn to love
'em. They are different in may respects from the B/W
episodes, but they are still Mayberry folks and have
lessons to be learned and I do enjoy them, but in a
different way. I believe another reason they are
different in addition to the growth and maturity of
the actors and their characters, is that the writers
as well as the director of the show changed with the
color episodes. Even with the same characters, that
could have given a different slant to the character's
personalities and the episodes being filmed. I also
enjoyed the outdoor sets and seeing the old 40 acres
backlot in color.

Just my thoughts.

"Please tell your Aunt Bee that Opie's schoolteacher
returned her muffing tin!!" Wham, right in the
stomach!

I stand corrected ! I did not realize that Howards past was ever really
explained in the color episodes. I still have a problem with the color
episodes though. In the black and white episodes Thelma Lou would never have
married anyone else. The class reunion episode with Barney returning is the
perfect example of all that is wrong with the color episodes, it prooves, in
an almost unwatchable moment that Mayberry is not the same, as Barney is
faced with the one obstacle that Andy cant save him from. Sorry to be Mr.
Negative, but does anyone else have problems with the color episodes.

Anyway, take care! "Barn, lets try and keep this on an adult level."

I don't know who brought up the subject of picking your favorite character on
TAGS to become, but I have enjoyed reading the replys tremendously! After
pondering the question for some time I think I would like to be "Millie" in
the bakery. I have worked in a bakery before and could probably whip up some
of those lemmon cookies for motorbelt too..ha. Every time I see the episode
where Opie comes by to pick up a chocolate cake for Aunt Bee my mouth waters.
I'm sure I couldn't keep Millie's nice trim figure while working there. Now
the downside to the being Millie..having to date Howard Sprague. Now I want
everyone to realize I am not saying anything ugly about Howard..it's just
that I don't think he's my type. He is a wonderful guy though and would be
perfect for someone, just not me...I mean "Millie". She obviously figured
that out herself since they cancelled their wedding plans. And what kind of
girl would date a guy like "Clyde"? But anyways, I will stick with Millie for
the cakes and sticky buns..yuuummmm yuuummmm

Think I'll call Aunt Bee and get her cherry popover recipe so I can start
working on my baking skills tonight!

Howard first appered in the lost broach epsode, I believe, as an insurance
adjuster. He use a different name in this episode. My family gave me the
Mayberry trivia game for Christmas and we are having a great time, except
noone wants to play with me.

Hey, Ya'all!
This is my first TAGS fan club experience. Thanks for the information and
for going over the Rules. I'd read about the rules being mentioned in
various other folks e-mails, but didn't know what they were talking about.
Thanks for keeping the new kids on the block (in town) informed.

I don't post much, usually content to read everyone's notes and
observations. The Digest has been especially enjoyable since the beginning
of the year, welcome to all the new folks.

Speaking of new folks, can I offer a couple of helpful hints? Hang around a
little while before jumping right in. Read a few issues of the digest and
invest some time on the TAGSRWC and WBMUTBB websites. If you get the lay of
the land, you won't embarrass yourself by asking questions/making
observations that have been made many times before (although all the good
neighbors here are unfailingly gracious to answer politely all inquires).
Also, this will help you avoid rule infractions (which Allan always spots,
BTW, and for which we love and appreciate him!). In other words, try to
strike a balance somewhere between Quiet Sam and Ed Sawyer.

As for my Mayberry job, I could go one of two directions: 1. Stay in my
current field of asset protection/loss prevention working for Weaver at the
Department store (though I'm sure I wouldn't look as good as Barney did as a
mannequin in hunting clothes). 2. Work with Gomer and Goober at the fillin'
station, for completely obtuse reasons: I don't know the first thing about
fixing cars, and George Lindsey and I are from the same hometown (Jasper,
AL). I'm sure I'd enjoy the fillin' station job the most, since it is
second only to Floyd's barbershop as a "social center" for the men of
Mayberry. I'm just not sure me and the wife and our five sons would be
comfortable in the little room in the back.

thing at his site. i didn't know that i was going to step on so many toes. as

***NOTE FROM ALLAN***
Don't feel too bad Dave. It's my fault for not making sure all our "new
folks" here in town knew abou the "rules." I'll try to do better and I expect
folks will be really quick to forgive. After all, this is "the friendly town"
of Mayberry. -- Allan

"i just didn't like aunt bee....am i the only one?"

You know what I like about Aunt Bee? She is the embodiment of the women
of my mother's generation, those who would give themselves to others one
chore at a time, and positively beam over the prospect of being needed by
others. My mother has given her entire life to other people, and she never
ceases to amaze me. Even now, when she and my dad are retired and could be
living the life they always dreamed of, traveling the U.S. and taking in the
sights, they have opted not to do so, simply so that they can stay at home
and care for my uncle who is an invalid. Of course, she is the primary
caretaker of this man who is my FATHER's brother. I can't begin to imagine
giving myself and so much of my life to someone who is not my child or my
husband. But for her, and for so many like her, it is truly a joy to serve
others in that way. I have wondered lately what will become of the world
when they are gone. I cannot imagine women from my generation picking up
where they left off. I'm sorry if I've gotten off on a tangent here, but
the truth is that I love Aunt Bee because she is one of those women who give
themselves away so freely and never expect anything in return except the
knowledge that what they have to give is truly valuable...and it is. She
isn't the most comical character on the show, and she isn't the most
talented, I suppose, but for those of us who were raised in the south, she
is a very realistic character, and we love her because of the love that
others like her have given to us for our entire lives.
She would forgive the comment mentioned above, of course, and because of
that we all will forgive and forget, because that is the true spirit of
Mayberry.

Speaking of forgiveness, I was watching an episode the other night, one I
hadn't seen in years. It was the episode about Goober's talking dog. I had
forgotten how funny parts of it were, and I was genuinely touched by the
lesson in the end. In an age when the most popular television shows seem to
be those that capitalize on the humiliation of others, I was truly thankful
to be reminded of what a practical joke really is. That Andy sure is good
with a teachable moment. I hope my students were watching (and maybe they
were since the new episodes of Survivor haven't started yet.)

It's well past dinner time, and Christmas has me strapped, so the Diner's
out of the question. Think I'll go into the kitchen and open a jar of
kerosene cucumbers.

Martha
