>>>Hhhhmmmm... regarding the different instruments that Andy plays on the
show, I know I'm not as educated as many of you, but as I recall he plays
(well, the guitar of course on many episodes), the tuba on "The Mayberry
Band", he plunks a few notes on the piano on "Barneys Physical" and I think
he plays a horn (I want to say French Horn, but I'm not sure) on "The Sermon
for Today". ...are there more??
>>>

We're getting close here. There's the guitar in numerous episodes, the tuba
in "The Mayberry Band" and "Sermon for Today" (sorry, no French horn in any
episode), the organ in "Church Organ" (as mentioned yesterday) and the piano
in "Barney's Physical." There's one other episode in which he plays the
piano, and there's still one more instrument that no one has gotten yet.

I sure hope my complaint in jest didn't cause all those multiple postings
of Paul's last message ! LOL!! I'm glad to find out who Frick and Frack
were. It brought a pleasant memory to me as a young lady I worked with
several years ago once referred to her two little boys like that; they
were real mischievous and she was a cutie-pie herself who was thoroughly
enjoying motherhood despite their shennigans.
What are "Jack tales" anyway?

been studing on this Helen thing too, and you
may be right about the "mother figure", although Miss
Ellie and Peggy both gave Andy what for too, I think
he liked strong women, but I have been thinking it was
because Helen was kinda red headed and with Opie being
a red head, this makes us assume that his Ma was also,
maybe Andy had a real soft spot for red headed women.
As for Charlene, no offence but I do not believe she
was educated enough for Andy (don't no body get mad,
cause I love Charlene, she sings like an angel).
******************************************
I agree on this one" Let me get this straight, you expect me to spend the
rest of my life with a skinny giggly 15 year old girl". I also think
Charlene couldn't quite cut it, but then as Barney says "Opie needs a
mother, you both love music and she has a lovely singin' voice."
As for Peggy's east Texas drawl, living there for quite some time, yes I
agree on that one also. I think my favorite is Ellie and then Miss Peggy
simply because she strike close to home and also a "lovely singin' voice."
Rose love sunshine, violets love dew...please Miss Peggy sing another one."

Subject: TAGS in the classroom

In response to Stephanie Lynch's comment about using TAGS in the classroom, I
am a 5th grade teacher and for years I have been using the episode "Andy
Discovers America" as a way to end my Revolutionary War unit and to begin our
study of the Civil War. The students love it, and I also teach the concepts of
facts and exaggeration with this episode. I even submitted my lesson plan for
this to the LEARN NC website for educators, and it was approved. I also use
TAGS to teach character education in my classroom. "The Haunted House" and
"The Christmas Story" are used for Halloween and Christmas.
In my school, I'm known as the "TAGS teacher."

the one Andy plays is a B-flat tuba, I believe. If anyone can support or

In addition to being pretty good at trivia, I'm not too bad on the tuba (for
them that don't know, I am an orchestra director).

Unlike most band instruments, tubas are built in 4 different keys: Bb, C,
Eb, and F; however, because sizes vary greatly from one manufacturer to
another, you can't tell what key a tuba is in just by looking at it. One
tubist I know has on Eb Willson that is roughly the same size as my Bb
Mirafone.

The Bb tuba is what all bands use, so that's probably what Andy played on
TAGS. Most symphony tubists prefer a C tuba (sometimes referred to as CC),
because symphonic music is often written in the sharp keys, which can be
awkward on Bb instruments. Eb and F tubas are used for solo and small
ensemble work.

The sousaphone is a kind of tuba that wraps around your body, with the bell
above your head. They are very common in marching bands, although nowadays
more and more bands use what's called a convertible tuba, which is a regular
"sit down" tuba with a special leadpipe that lets you hold it on your
shoulder with the bell facing directly forward. To march with a full size
tuba like Andy did is not easy. It didn't look like Andy even used a strap
or anything.

P.S. Sorry about all those duplicate messages; I picked up a virus that
messed up my email program, but I think I have it under control now. I sure
hope the bug don't get down in my lair-nyx.
