On my local station the other day was TAGS with Ernest
T. falling in love with "his darling Romeena", at Mrs.
Wiley's party. I especially enjoyed the fact that
Andy and Barney truly seemed to get "tickled" when
Andy asked Barney if he wanted to dance with anyone at
the party. Barney replied: "Are you kidding, if you
flew a quail through the room every woman in it would
point." The expressions on Barney's face when Andy is
holding Ernest T. back after he has been thrown out of
Mrs. Wileys party is wonderful, Barney of course is in
the "karate stance" he has made famous.

so, where can you get one? I've never noticed one listed at Weaver's, but I bet
it would be a big seller.>>

Johnny Lightning makes one, or at least did at one point. It was metal,
die-cast, and from what I've seen it appears to be either a '61 or '62 Galaxie.
They pop up a lot on eBay...

Did anyone happen to catch "The Music Man" on AMC the other night? It had been
awhile since I'd seen it. I was impressed all over again with Ron(ny) Howard's
performance. I got chill bumps when he hopped out of the crowd and sang his
part of the "Wells Fargo Wagon" song. Perhaps it had something to do with
having seen the TAGS episode "Opie the Birdman" on TV Land just a couple of
hours earlier...no doubt about it, they had a real prize in that boy...

"Jack Tales" were first popularized by (I believe) a feller named
Richard Chase. I remember him visiting my college campus way back in
the 90s (OK, the 70s). Another highly recommended (by me!) author
who's connected with the Jack Tales is Donald Davis.

Hi all,

Johnny Lightning Hollywood on Wheels (set of 8) is still available. One of
the 8 cars is the 'Squad Car.' These are 1/64 th scale. There are several
places selling these. I purchased my set from Amazon.com for $29.99. Here is
there link.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JFF5/qid=987023800/sr=1-14/ref=sc

There are probably single Squad Cars available on EBay or other auctions. Try
searching Mayberry Andy Griffith Squad Car. Who knows, there might even be a
larger scale out there somewhere.

Mayberry says thanks & happy motoring,

PART 1

(Barney enters the courthouse carrying a book and walks over to Andy
who is filing papers)
Barney: Hi Andy.
  Andy: Hi Barn.
Barney: Look at that would ya.
  Andy: What's That?
Barney: My old history book. The one I used way back in the eighth Grade.
Andy: I'll be dog. (Andy takes the book and sits down at the desk. Barney
stands beside him.)
Barney: Yeah, With all this talk with Opie about how he good he is doing in
school and all. I got to thinking about my own schooling and I dug that up.
My old history book.
Andy: Bernard P. Fife. Hmm, This book belongs to Bernard P. Fife. If lost
or stolen please
return to Bernard P. Fife. Signed Bernard P. Fife. Your Book?
Barney: Yeah. Look at the next page.
Andy: The History of the United States of America, by Bernard P. Fife.
Barney: Haha. Well, remember how we used to paste our own names over the
author?
Andy: Oh Yeah, Boy you've had this a long time.
Barney: Well since the eighth grade. And you want to know something? There's
things right there
in that book that I learned that I still remember to this day.

Yes Mickey, I have one (actually it's my 7-year old son's). I believe it's
made by Matchbox (I can't find it right now). I bought it at the last
Mayberry Days celebration in Mt Airy - from Bart Boatwright, I think. I
believe it came with a squad car trading card, but I'm not positive.

By the way Mickey - I knew a guy in high school with the same name as yours
- - in Greensboro. Was it you?

>>>Did he ever play a flute-type instrument? I think they're called
recorders. Or was it Barney? Also, I thought that Andy played the
baritone, not a tuba. Or is there a difference?
>>>

Neither Andy nor Barney ever played any type of woodwind instrument on the
show (unless you count Barney's harmonica - I suppose that could be
considered a woodwind). The recorder looks something like a clarinet, but
without a reed or keys. It has a row of holes that the player covers with
his or her fingers. I don't recall ever seeing one of these on TAGS.

The baritone horn is very similar to the euphonium. Both instruments look
like small tubas; they are pitched one octave lower than the cornet and one
octave higher than the tuba. Andy's horn is definitely a tuba. There is a
euphonium in the Mayberry band in "Sermon for Today." The person playing it
looks very much like Roger Hanover, Aunt Bee's suitor (played by Wallace
Ford) in "Aunt Bee's Romance."

So far we've got Andy playing guitar, tuba, piano, and organ. There's still
one left that nobody has gotten yet. Hint: it's in the percussion family.

Johnny Lightning made one a couple of years ago, of the 1961 model. I don't
know the exact scale but it's about the size of a Hot Wheels car. They're
available on eBay by the dozens. Just browse for "Andy Griffith Car."
Expect to pay about $4 - $6. Each one comes packaged with a trading card.
I think there are 10 different cards, but the cars are all the same. It was
just a dumb gimmick to get silly collectors to buy ten of them instead of
just one.

Hey to the gang!

Our trip in LA went much better than expected (what a relief for me)! We
started out by having lunch with Rance and Clint Howard at Dalts in Burbank.
They spent better than 2 hours telling stories, answering questions, signing
autographs and taking photos with our small group. Afterwards, Clint took us
to his agents office and showed us the "behind the scenes" workings of how
they get their clients jobs. We then visited a place called "THE SWORD AND
THE STONE," a business that makes props for movies like "The Patriot" and
"The Mummy." The proprietor had many original props from famous TV shows and
movies that he allowed us to view. The following day we were invited to Kit
and Sue McNear's home where we were the first to view things like the
original "Mayberry Gazette" newspaper from TAGS that reported "Local Barber
Catches Escaped Convicts." He also showed us a miniature badge that was
given to him at a TAGS party for all of the cast members back in the early
'70's. We also were shown a few things from Howard McNear's days on the
radio show GUNSMOKE and lots of very rare photos from his career. We were
also able to meet Margaret Kerry (Mrs. Scobie) and Ken Berry (Sam Jones)
while in LA. Our Picnic at Myers Lake went well other than it was a little
chilly. The high temp for the week was only 65 but we had a good time
anyway. We did other things like visit Melody Ranch, an old west movie
studio where a large percentage of the westerns were filmed (GUNSMOKE, HAVE
GUN, WILL TRAVEL, etc.) and they had just opened their movie museum. The
Mayberry prop that they have is an original Mayberry Squad Car that Gene
Autry purchased in 1962. Unfortunately, they hadn't removed it from storage
so we were unable to view it. We did many other things that weren't related
to TAGS, so I won't go into that, but if you missed it, you should try to go
next year if I do it again.

I will be posting some photos on my web site soon, so I'll let you know when
I do.

As to Lou Ann Pooveys father who played on TAGS and Gomer Pyle ,I believe
the gentleman that played Mr. Poovey on Gomer played Ben Weaver in the
Shoplifter episode of TAGS.
